Chapter 9
“I’m Elise Beaumont. I was the other woman in Alpha Ronan’s mate bond,” she said into the camera, her voice shaking.
“Five years ago, I destroyed his ex-Luna and became Luna of Hale Pack. I never thought karma would catch up to me like this.”
“Ronan is a twisted psychopath. He only sees me as a replacement for his ex-mate. These years have been a living hell.”
The livestream flickered on my hotel screen.
Her hair hung loose and messy. Her face-once flawless, perfectly polished-looked hollow now. Worn down.
For the first time, there was no mask. Just raw, unfiltered exhaustion.
“Crazy? No, I’m not crazy,” she read a comment aloud, voice sharp with defiance.
I’m perfectly sane. I know exactly what I’m doing. All I want is out of this bond!”
The feed cut.
Just static.
Ronan stepped out of the bathroom, face clean of blood now. The air felt heavy.
Gavin’s voice crackled through the phone-steady, urgent.
“Public opinion’s under control. Finn’s been completely cut off from the news. He won’t know. The board and the Elders are furious. Once the storm warning lifts, you need to get back immediately.”
“Send Finn to Silvermoon Isle,” Ronan said, his gaze locking onto mine as he dropped onto the sofa beside me.
“First flight tomorrow morning.”
He hung up. Wiped his face with one hand.
Just one week. Stay with him for one week. He’s well-behaved. Sensible-”
“I know I can’t take him with me,” I cut in, my voice firm but strained. “And I won’t. I’ll stay with him quietly during this time.”
“Let me… just this once, play the part of his mother. For the first time. And the very last.”
The next day, Finn arrived at noon. Tiny backpack slung over one shoulder, hand clutched tight in the warrior’s grip.
His cheeks flushed pink as he approached.
“Hellam. Sorry to bother you,” he whispered.

The shock of finding out I was pregnant crashing over me like a tidal wave. I’d thought about ending it-a desperate thought in a desperate time.
My bond with Ronan was already shattered.

There was no point bringing an unwanted child into a world so full of pain.
I’d waited for his arrival with so much hope. Only to face death before we could even part in life.
Time’s been crueler than I ever imagined. I never thought I’d see this child again.
“It’s no trouble at all,” I managed, tears slipping silently down my cheeks.
“I’m very happy to meet you, Finn.”
Finn had been born premature. Small. Fragile. Developed slower than other pups.
But there was something sharp in his gaze-a sensitivity that caught you off guard. His manners were impeccable. Gentle. Refined.
Even I had to admit-Ronan had raised him well.
A rotten man, somehow raising a child with a pure heart.
“Dad loves me a lot,” Finn said, focused on his dessert.
“He changed all my diapers. They said I was sick a lot when I was little, so Dad worked from the hospital the whole time.”
“Dad taught me so many things.” He licked the corner of his mouth with delight.
“I love him soooooo much.”
I pressed my head into my hand. The ache inside me spread like an insistent tide. I couldn’t find the words. Only managed a smile that felt more
like a mask.
Life’s a long road.
One day, Finn might lose his way. But that would be a lesson he’d have to learn on his own.
I couldn’t give him what Ronan could.
And maybe if I’d raised him myself-he wouldn’t be the remarkable kid he was today.
Saying goodbye to him was my lesson to endure.
A week later, Ronan arrived at Silvermoon Isle.
The scandal from Elise’s livestream-which had exploded across the internet like wildfire-had been quietly buried through corporate
intervention.
Elise’s past was laid bare. A history of mental illness.
Ronan personally attended a press conference to stabilize things. Declared that as her mate, his failure to monitor her health was a grave
oversight.
He announced Elise would be stepping away from the spotlight to focus on recovery. A statement delivered with flawless sincerity.

With this final act, I severed the last of my ties to Ronan.
As I prepared to leave the island, Ronan brought Finn to see me off.
I couldn’t stop myself.
I pulled the little boy into a tight embrace, feeling the warmth and softness of his small frame against me.
His tiny arms wrapped around my neck.
For a fleeting moment, our heartbeats aligned-echoing the rhythm they once shared when he lived beneath my ribs.
Ronan took Finn’s hand. As I walked toward the gate, he suddenly said, “If you want, you can come visit him anytime.”
“No,” I said firmly. “I won’t return to this territory again.”
The screen displayed my flight’s departure.
Destination: a wide, open future.
Finn leaned against the glass, his voice barely a whisper.
“…She’s my real mom, isn’t she?”
Ronan stayed silent.
Under the vast expanse of a clear blue sky, the plane climbed into the clouds.
I gazed out the window at the rolling white horizon, feeling a bittersweet sense of closure.
I pulled off Ronan’s locket. Tucked it into my jacket pocket.
Kansas smelled like wheat and gasoline when I landed.
I left the locket in the airport bathroom. Didn’t look back.
