Gillian absolutely refused to honor the bet, but Emma couldn't care less.
She left the auction house with the signed contract in hand, in an incredibly good mood.
More importantly, she had finally met Pamela Palmer.
"Carter, do you have time to take me to the Harrington Estate?"
Emma asked with a bright smile. She needed to get closer to Pamela's daily life if she wanted to uncover anything useful.
Carter's eyes lit up with sudden excitement. "Tonight? Or tomorrow?"
"Let's do tomorrow. I need to swing by the office first."
Right as Emma finished speaking, her phone started ringing. It was an international call.
She answered it as she slid into the passenger seat. Even without being on speakerphone, the voices on the other end were loud enough for Carter to hear clearly.
"Julian said you got married! Didn't you break off the engagement with the Harringtons? Who the hell did you marry?"
"Yeah, exactly! Em, Percy is absolute garbage. You better not have married him!"
A man and a woman's voices practically shouted over each other through the receiver. Emma rubbed her ear defensively. "It's not Percy. It's... someone else. I'll explain everything when you guys get back."
"Clara just told me you casually blew over ten million dollars today. Did you buy another car? Do you have enough cash?" Travis asked.
Clara immediately chimed in, "Who cares if she has enough! Sending her more is never a bad idea. I'm wiring you fifteen million right now."
"Fine, I'll send thirty million."
Emma rubbed her temples, desperately trying to wedge a word into the chaos. "Guys, I don't need any money—"
"Hey, when I fly back, let me borrow The Shadow Chaser, alright? I've got a track race coming up over there."
"Get lost! That car is a gift for her brother," Clara snapped, then quickly added, "Have fun back home, Em! Wait for us to get back. Gotta go, Travis and I are packing our bags."
The call ended just as abruptly as it began.
Emma stared at her phone. Within minutes, the massive wire transfer notifications popped up on her screen.
"Is this better?"
Carter's entire body went rigid. In less than a second, he was sitting bolt upright, suddenly the one completely out of his depth.
Emma suddenly found his reaction hilarious. Leaning completely into his space, she rested her chin delicately against his broad, solid shoulder.
"You need to get used to it, *Husband*. If people notice something is off, it'll ruin everything."
The way she purred the word sent an electric shock straight through Carter's bones. His prominent Adam's apple bobbed heavily, his mouth suddenly running dry.
Emma hadn't expected such an intense reaction. She tilted her head, unable to suppress a mischievous, sparkling laugh.
But before she could finish laughing, a large, searingly warm hand wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.
A dark, predatory glint flared in Carter's eyes. He leaned down, his lips brushing against her ear as a low, incredibly magnetic chuckle vibrated from his chest.
"Alright. Whatever my wife wants."
