Emma Lockwood walked into the CFT Corporation building, her cheeks flushed. She hadn't taken more than a few steps before Percy Harrington caught up to her.
"Emma Lockwood."
Emma glanced back at him, raising an eyebrow. "Can I help you?"
"Did you sleep with Carter?"
Percy glared at her, his eyes bloodshot. At those words, Emma's expression grew cold.
"The day Harvey Kent spiked your drink, Carter was the one who took you away, wasn't he?"
Harvey had already turned himself in and was sentenced. Percy had hired people to look into it, and the only thing they found was that Carter had taken her away that day.
Today, Carter and Emma had looked so intimate. He didn't believe for a second that nothing had happened between them!
"You and Carter really are worlds apart," Emma said. Her impression of Carter had just improved significantly.
They were both men, yet Percy's first reaction upon hearing she had been in danger was to ask if she had slept with someone.
Carter, on the other hand, had respected her. Even when she was out of her mind, he made sure she was safe, opting to take a freezing cold shower to lower his own temperature rather than taking the easy way out and doing something to her.
"I'm your fiancé!" Percy ground his teeth in frustration, making Emma laugh.
"Fiancé? You were the one who ditched me at the engagement party, and you were the one who called to break up." She looked at him with dripping sarcasm. "Did you forget what you said to me at the club?"
Percy was left speechless. Back then, he had only wanted to see the usually proud Emma beg him.
He had never said he wouldn't marry her, though.
"Emma, if you come back to me now, you'll still be my fiancée."
Emma burst into full-blown laughter. "You really need your head checked. Your girlfriend right now is Gillian Lockwood. Not long ago, you were fighting me for a ring on her behalf. Besides, I'm already married."
She held up her left hand, displaying the thirty-carat blue diamond ring on her ring finger. The placement was a universal symbol of marriage.
"What did you say?" Percy froze, his gaze darkening into a scowl. "Stop joking around. Marriage isn't just about wearing a ring."
Percy stood in stunned silence. He had always assumed that whenever Emma brought up CFT and the Vance Group, she was trying to use him to fulfill her medical dreams. He had always cut her off and fled back to the country, terrified she would realize he didn't have that kind of influence.
Now, he belatedly realized how much he had missed out on.
"What about your love for me? Don't you love me? How could you get together with someone else and marry them so quickly? I don't believe it. I don't believe you could just let me go."
Percy's mind was a mess. Emma had loved him. She had to.
Their relationship hadn't been fake.
Emma pulled her arm free, narrowing her eyes at him with disdain.
"Percy, your affection was transactional, so the love I felt in return was limited. It's hard to drain an ocean of love, but pouring out a single glass of water? That's incredibly easy."
She watched all the color drain from his face and arched a brow.
"Also, if you want to know who I married, go ask Carter."
