Percy went straight to the company.
"Carter, Emma is married. Is it... to you?"
Carter smirked, raising an eyebrow. "Who told you that?"
"Emma did. She's lying, right? She's just trying to use you to make me jealous."
Percy didn't believe Carter would get married on a whim. The man had always kept his distance from women, rejecting every socialite who threw herself at him.
"She wasn't lying."
Carter pulled out a marriage certificate he carried with him, opening it to tap the photo of the two of them.
Percy froze, rooted to the spot.
It was real?
He was shocked and confused, a bizarre, suffocating emotion twisting in his chest.
"Carter, she purposely seduced you. She doesn't even like you. She just wants to use you to get back at me. How could you believe her so easily?"
Carter's expression darkened. He tucked the marriage certificate away, a freezing chill flashing in his eyes.
"Percy, she is my wife now. What you need to learn is respect."
Percy ground his teeth at the word 'wife', unwilling to back down. "Does the family know? Do your parents know? Would they ever agree to let you marry a woman like that?"
"A woman like what?" Carter shot him an icy glare.
But having lost all reason, Percy entirely missed the warning.
"She's my ex-girlfriend. Aren't you embarrassed to marry her?"
Carter gently patted the pocket holding his certificate, his gaze turning inexplicably tender.
"You are indeed the only embarrassing thing in Emma's past."
Percy's face turned livid at the calm insult. "Carter, I'm your family. How can you side with an outsider? Emma is just using you. Why won't you believe me?"
Percy demanded, refusing to accept that Emma could marry Carter without an ulterior motive.
A small part of him desperately hoped Carter would believe him.
Carter's gaze turned somber. "She is my wife, and of course, I will trust and protect her. Percy, if you can't learn to respect her, I don't mind teaching you myself."
