Emma woke up, headed downstairs to make some breakfast, and found two people sitting in her living room.
"Scarlett?" Emma was confused. Her gaze shifted to the elegantly dressed woman who shared a resemblance with Scarlett, and she immediately put two and two together. "You must be Helena. Hello, I'm Emma Lockwood."
After a fleeting moment of surprise, she politely greeted them and confidently introduced herself.
Helena was a bit taken aback by her composed reaction, but she kept her face stern. "Since you know who I am, you should also know why I'm here."
"You want to ask about my marriage to Carter, I assume." Emma walked down the stairs, poured two glasses of water, and set them on the coffee table. "But I need to eat breakfast first. I have a bad stomach."
Her stomach issues were a lingering ailment from her time abroad, where she often went hungry. If she didn't eat on time, she'd end up needing medication.
Helena nodded, though she was deeply displeased internally.
While the mother and daughter waited, more guests arrived at the house.
It was Violet and Gillian.
Assuming they were representing the bride's family to discuss the marriage, Helena instructed Scarlett to let them in.
When Emma walked out of the kitchen with her bowl of oatmeal, her face darkened at the sight of them.
"Emma, Mom came all this way to see you, and you didn't even come to the door to welcome her?"
Gillian, recognizing Helena, tried to seize the opportunity to ruin Emma's image.
Just as she hoped, Helena's expression grew even more sour.
Emma quietly took a sip of her oatmeal, her voice flat. "I'm busy today. If you have something to say, make an appointment for another time."
"Emma, this is Carter's property, isn't it? Aren't you worried about dragging his reputation through the mud by just moving in so shamelessly? Have you no self-respect?"
Gillian's continued mockery made Helena realize something was very wrong.
Did the Lockwood family not know Emma was married to her son?
"Violet, did you come here just to watch Gillian insult me?"
Emma didn't have the energy to argue with Gillian and just wanted them gone, addressing Violet directly.
