Listening to Logan's accusation, Emma let out a cold laugh.
She calmly walked over to the tea station, poured herself a glass of water, and turned back to face him. "Logan, is that the kind of person you think I am?"
Seeing the icy look on her face, Sebastian knew things were about to go south.
"Emma, ignore him. He's out of his mind."
But Logan was completely entrenched in his stubbornness. He shoved Sebastian aside, determined to have this out with Emma.
"Am I wrong? You backed Dad and Gillian into a corner before. I heard at the auction, you even tried to force Gillian to kneel to you in public. If you're resentful about the hardships you faced outside, you can take your anger out on me. Why do you have to make things so difficult for Gillian?"
Logan didn't want to see his two sisters at each other's throats, but Emma was taking things entirely too far this time.
He had heard she didn't even show respect to Raymond Harrington at the auction.
"Logan, do you really think Emma is that kind of person? Even if that did happen, you should be asking Gillian what she did or said to provoke it in the first place."
Sebastian frowned. Emma wasn't the type to maliciously target people, whereas Gillian was hardly a saint.
"Sebastian, Gillian is your blood relative. How can you side with an outsider? Why would Gillian ever bully someone unprovoked? You know how cautious and timid she is."
Logan could still vividly remember what Gillian was like when she first returned to the Lockwood family—cowering from everyone, too terrified to even ask for a five-dollar ice cream cone, just staring at it longingly.
Even the maids at home used to bully her. How could a girl like that ever go out of her way to cause trouble?
"You're right, Mr. Lockwood. Business is business."
Emma set her glass down, adding, "A large number of CFT researchers who were studying abroad have transferred back to continue their projects here. On top of that, CFT just recruited a new wave of local researchers. We genuinely have no empty labs available. Besides, I need to use them myself."
Sebastian realized Emma was genuinely furious now and wouldn't be renting out a single lab.
Frustrated with Logan, he wanted to keep negotiating with Emma, but he knew today was no longer the right time.
"Emma, please see if you can figure something out for the labs. I'll treat you to dinner another time. I won't bother you anymore today."
With that, Sebastian dragged Logan toward the door.
Logan sighed deeply. "Emma, you didn't use to be like this. You used to be the most understanding one."
"Mr. Lockwood, you didn't use to treat me like this, either."
Emma smirked, stepping closer to him. "I used to have an older brother who trusted and protected me unconditionally. But you aren't him anymore."
Had their grandfather really offered to bring Emma back?
"She was a minor when she left. Emma has always been beautiful. I can't even fathom how she survived those six years in a foreign country with no money and no one to rely on.
You people didn't pity her; you just blamed and complained about her at every turn. You have been unbelievably cruel to her."
Sebastian looked at him with profound disappointment, his eyes aching for Emma.
Just then, Gillian stepped out of a nearby car.
"Sebastian, I know you and Emma grew up together and you're close, but you can't just blame your own family for her sake, can you?"
Gillian had been worried Logan would run into Emma here, so she had come early to eavesdrop. She hadn't expected to hear Sebastian tearing into him like that.
She slammed the car door and marched over, glaring at Sebastian accusingly.
"You say we're cruel to her, but what about me? Wasn't the Lockwood family cruel to me?"
"I know Emma has power and influence now, and Mom, Dad, and my brothers all want to suck up to her. But does sucking up to her mean I have to be sacrificed?"
