Emma's words served as a sharp reminder to Helena. If her son hadn't been willing, there was no way Emma could have forced him to take the marriage photos, let alone cooperate at the registry office.
"Are you two really legally married? I didn't get a good look at the certificates at the office last time. Could you show me yours?"
Helena's expression softened slightly.
Emma pressed her lips together. "I don't have them. He kept both copies."
Helena was thoroughly dumbfounded. Carter had kept both copies?
No matter how she looked at it, that sounded exactly like Carter was terrified his new wife might back out.
Thinking back to how violently protective Carter had been toward Percy in his office, her suspicion that her son was the one who initiated this whole marriage grew stronger.
"Mom, I told you, Carter really likes her. You're worrying over nothing."
Scarlett sipped her tea. Suddenly, she remembered something.
"Emma, my aunt Pamela is hosting a gathering for all the socialites and wives the day after tomorrow. You should come! You're married to my brother now; it's the perfect time to show your face."
Emma's first instinct was to decline, but then Helena chimed in, "I believe Pamela is the one organizing it."
Emma's interest was immediately piqued. Pamela Palmer would be there?
"I actually have some free time, and since Carter and I got married so abruptly, our families haven't officially met yet. It would be a good opportunity."
Helena was confused. Hadn't she just met the Lockwood family women?
She was about to ask, but Emma received a phone call that seemed urgent.
"You go ahead and handle your business. Scarlett and I will head out now."
Helena decided she needed to have a serious talk with her son. Barging in to confront this young woman had been far too impulsive on her part.
