A week later, Douglas was discharged.
"Thank you for all your guidance, Dr. Ann. But are you absolutely sure you don't want the Harrington family to know you're the one who provided the protocol that woke him up so quickly? If they knew, they would be incredibly grateful, and it would do wonders for your reputation here."
Emma rubbed her temples as she listened to the doctor on the phone.
"No need."
Julian's warning had been right. Since she lacked a domestic medical license, she needed to keep a low profile.
"Then please at least allow our hospital to archive this treatment protocol under your name. Taking credit for your genius feels incredibly wrong."
"I merely provided the blueprint," Emma replied, her voice laced with exhaustion. "Your team executed the hard work. You deserve the credit."
"You're far too humble, Dr. Ann. You spent massive amounts of energy adjusting the intricate medication dosages every single day. Our director would love to invite you to the hospital as a visiting consultant when you have the time. We can also sponsor your domestic medical license."
Emma agreed to the offer, though she simply didn't have the time right now.
She hadn't slept properly in a week. She spent her days buried in institute research, and her nights burning the midnight oil analyzing Douglas's daily lab results to tweak his medication.
She was utterly exhausted.
Emma was planning to head home and sleep for half the day, only to find a visitor waiting at her company.
"Chugging coffee again? Is the workload that brutal?"
Hayden stood at the entrance, holding a fresh cup of coffee.
Emma waved him off. She didn't want to talk; she just wanted a bed to pass out on.
"I mean, you are Carter's wife on paper. Shouldn't you at least show some concern when he's severely injured?"
Hayden tilted his head. He had gone to the Harrington estate to visit Carter, only to find him so badly beaten he couldn't get out of bed. Yet the first thing Carter did when he opened his eyes was search his phone for her messages.
Carter hid his emotions well, but Hayden knew perfectly well that he was depressed and frustrated because Emma hadn't reached out once.
"Carter is injured?" Emma frowned.
That didn't make sense. If he was hurt, the specialists at Metropolitan Medical Center would have definitely mentioned it.
