Emma had genuinely fainted.
By the time Jeff half-carried Carter back to their villa, Julian was already standing guard by the bed. Emma was fast asleep with an IV drip in her arm.
Julian had been ready to rip Carter apart, but the furious rant died in his throat when he saw Carter limping painfully, requiring two people just to haul him up the stairs.
"What the hell happened to you?" Julian demanded.
Carter kept his mouth shut. He refused to air family dirty laundry.
Julian let out a cold laugh and waved Jeff away, signaling him to leave.
Carter sat down with agonizing difficulty, still maintaining his silence.
Julian slammed the door shut and crossed his arms. "If you refuse to talk, I won't pry. But I will assume you don't view Emma as your wife, and you clearly don't respect the Vance family as your in-laws."
Carter's lips parted, but he still found the reality too humiliating to confess.
"I've already chartered a private jet. I'm flying her out of the country as fast as possible. The Vance family can handle her divorce paperwork with our eyes closed."
The moment Julian said that, absolute panic shattered Carter's stoic expression.
But Julian didn't give him a chance to explain, spinning around to open the door and leave.
"Jul—"
Carter scrambled to get up and chase him, but the second he moved, blinding pain ripped through his body, stealing the breath from his lungs.
Julian swung the door open, only to find someone blocking the hallway.
"Mr. Vance..."
Caught eavesdropping, Jeff looked past Julian at his boss, who was currently dripping in a cold sweat from the pain. For the first time, Jeff decided to defy his orders.
"I'll tell you everything. Even if you're going to take Mrs. Harrington away, you deserve to know the truth. That way, if she ever asks, you'll have an answer for her."
Julian stared at the assistant with a spark of intrigue. He glanced over his shoulder at Carter and raised a brow. "Talk."
"It's not that the boss didn't care about his wife. He was subjected to the family's disciplinary beatings. His injuries are so severe he could barely get out of bed today."
Julian turned slightly to look at Carter. If he was punished by the family, it was undoubtedly tied to Douglas's hospitalization.
