"Huh?"
Carter was entirely blindsided by the accusation. His ears burned bright red as he buried his face in the pillow.
Did she figure out he had feelings for her?
There was no way.
He had hidden it so well! Had his attempts to seduce her really been that obvious?
Assuming his secret was out, Carter kept his face shoved in the pillow, entirely too mortified to speak.
But Emma, interpreting his silence as a guilty confession, instantly shut down. After a long, suffocating pause, she tossed the blanket aside. "Don't suffocate fresh wounds."
She sat down in the chair Julian had just vacated, her mind flashing violently back to the image of him giving those flowers to that woman.
Who he gave flowers to was absolutely none of her business.
Emma shifted uncomfortably in her seat. Sensing the sudden drop in her mood, Carter tried to lift his head to look at her.
"Don't move," she ordered, her voice laced with frost. She was clearly upset.
Carter hesitated. "Did someone cause trouble for you these past few days?"
Emma refused to answer. Getting this angry over a bouquet of flowers felt pathetic.
Besides, they had agreed this was purely a partnership. Being possessive made absolutely zero sense.
"I'm just tired from the lab."
She stood up. "Get some rest."
Carter gave a muffled hum of agreement. Emma walked out, shutting the door firmly behind her.
She marched straight downstairs, cornering Jeff as he walked back inside.
"What exactly happened to his back?"
Jeff stiffened. He could spill the truth to Julian, but telling his wife was a completely different minefield.
Julian wasn't aware of the fragile, complicated nature of their marriage.
If he told Emma, and she genuinely didn't care, his boss's physical pain would be nothing compared to the emotional devastation.
And if she did care enough to grant the divorce just to spare him, his boss's heart would literally shatter.
"Well..."
Jeff awkwardly wrung his hands, totally unsure of what to say.
Emma narrowed her eyes. Was it because she hadn't shown up at the hospital?
