At Douglas's booming shout, the rest of the family poured out of the villa.
"Emma? Why are you here?" Helena asked, looking highly displeased. If it weren't for Emma, her son wouldn't have been beaten half to death.
She couldn't understand what spell Emma had cast on Carter to make him violently refuse a divorce.
Emma remained completely unfazed. "I brought a gift for Douglas."
"Oh, now you remember to bring gifts? Where were you when he was in the hospital? You didn't show up, and you didn't even send a damn text."
Gillian mocked her mercilessly.
Emma gave her a flat look, but before she could speak, Percy marched up to her. "Leave. If you give him another heart attack today, I'll make you pay."
"His heart is perfectly fine now."
Emma said softly. She had personally drafted his protocol, meticulously adjusting the treatment daily to account for every micro-fluctuation in his vitals. As long as he didn't throw a massive fit, he was in zero danger of a relapse anytime soon.
Gillian let out a loud, mocking laugh. "And how would you know? Don't act like playing pretend at CFT makes you an expert. Not even the top specialists at Metropolitan Medical Center would dare make that guarantee. Who the hell do you think you are?"
Emma didn't bother arguing with her. Gillian was too stupid to grasp it anyway.
She looked directly at Douglas and offered a polite nod. "Failing to visit you in the hospital was my oversight. I came today specifically to make amends."
After seeing Carter giving flowers to another woman that day, showing up to play the concerned, doting wife for his family was the absolute last thing on her mind.
She had completely forgotten that as the granddaughter-in-law, her presence was socially mandatory. She blamed it on spending the last six years abroad, leaving her completely out of touch with domestic social etiquette.
"I've never seen anyone come to apologize empty-handed," Gillian sneered, her tone dripping with venom. "Just make sure you aren't using an apology as a cover to do something malicious."
The word "malicious" made Helena frown deeply.
Regardless of her feelings, Emma was still Carter's wife. Gillian publicly humiliating Emma was no different than publicly humiliating her son.
"Emma has lived abroad for years, so it's completely normal for her to slip up on social graces. But she certainly isn't here to hurt anyone. You should really learn to watch your mouth, Gillian."
Helena shot Gillian a sharp warning before turning back to Emma. "Wait until Carter recovers, and the two of you can visit together."
Gillian had no idea what a CTA was. Assuming Emma was just throwing out big words to sound impressive, she kept laughing.
"CFT? CTA? Wow, sounds so scary. Do you think the Harringtons can't afford a scanner, or that Metropolitan Medical Center doesn't have one? Why would they need your charity? You really look down on this family, don't you?"
The moment Gillian finished speaking, several people walked through the front door. One of them immediately spoke up, his voice trembling with excitement.
"You are completely wrong. An experimental CFT scanner is the absolute pinnacle of global medical technology. When the Vance family announced that this scanner was manufactured domestically, it sent shockwaves around the world. Foreign hospitals were practically declaring war on each other trying to secure the import rights.
"When the Vance family ultimately decreed that all of their medical tech belonged exclusively to this country, the higher-ups were so thrilled they awarded the family a national medal of honor."
The lead specialist assigned to Douglas stepped fully into the room, his eyes glued to Emma in absolute awe.
"So you're the Harrington granddaughter-in-law. Mr. Harrington, you are an incredibly blessed man."
Emma offered a polite nod. Being praised so highly in front of the specialists stroked Douglas's ego perfectly, and a warm, satisfied smile spread across his face.
Gillian felt like she was losing her mind. She shrieked, "Then she's just playing the hero after the fact! She didn't come when he was sick, and now that he's better, she magically pulls out a machine? God knows what she's plotting!"
