While Julian didn't explicitly mention Emma's previous broken engagement to Percy, his underlying meaning was crystal clear to the entire Harrington family.
Evelyn and her husband's faces instantly darkened. Just as Uncle Raymond opened his mouth to retort, Douglas stepped into the room.
"Regarding Carter and Emma's wedding, they are no longer children. The family won't interfere too heavily; we will simply let them do whatever makes them happy."
Douglas didn't outright agree to Julian's demands, but he tactfully gave him—and by extension, the Vance family—the respect they commanded.
The explosive tension in the banquet hall fizzled out. Julian sat comfortably in the garden lounge, swirling a glass of red wine, his sharp gaze locked firmly on the Lockwood family.
The Lockwoods were staring at Emma with incredibly complicated expressions.
"She tosses around tens of millions of dollars like it's nothing, yet she refused to lift a finger to bail Uncle Bernard out of jail. Emma is unbelievably selfish."
Gillian muttered bitterly. Logan frowned. "Stop bringing that up."
It was their father's mistake in the first place; there was no point in complaining about it.
Gillian felt like Logan was defending Emma and instantly played the victim. "Logan, do you think I'm wrong? Fine, I'm not as ruthless as Emma. But it's not my fault I wasn't as lucky as her and didn't get to experience the high life growing up, is it?"
The moment she said that, Charles and Violet were overwhelmed with sympathy.
"Enough, why are you always scolding your sister? What did she say that was wrong? Without the Lockwood family, would Emma have any of this wealth today? If you ask me, she's an ungrateful brat who forgot her roots."
Charles shot Emma a displeased glare. Seeing her look over, he instantly plastered on a fake, polite smile and stood up.
"Emma, it's your Grandmother's birthday in a few days. You should come home for a visit."
Emma met his gaze with flat indifference. She actually hadn't forgotten Beatrice's birthday.
"I don't have time."
She rejected him without hesitation, though it was genuinely true.
Her grandmother's birthday happened to fall on the exact same day Tristan was flying back for his race, and she was planning to be at the track.
"You can come. Gillian won't be home that day."
