Travis's expression darkened imperceptibly.
Tristan raised an eyebrow. "Emma, this 'friend' of yours is racing tomorrow too. Why don't we make a bet and see who wins?"
Emma laughed at that.
"What's the bet?"
Tristan assumed he had only lost the impromptu race because of his car. If he used his professional track car, he would definitely crush him.
He thought for a second. "If he loses, you take a microphone at the venue, apologize to Gillian in front of everyone, and swear you'll never scheme against the Lockwood family again."
Travis shot him a look. So this guy was a Lockwood?
"Fine. But if you lose, you grab that microphone, confess to everything you did today, apologize to me, and swear you'll never bother me again."
Emma smiled at him. For someone as prideful as Tristan, publicly humiliating himself was a fate worse than death.
"I won't lose."
Brimming with confidence, Tristan got back into his car and sped off.
Emma and Carter got into Travis's car. As Travis drove, his eyes kept darting to the rearview mirror.
Carter's jacket was securely wrapped around Emma, and Carter was gently rubbing her hands to keep them warm.
Travis watched them for a moment, slowly putting the pieces together.
Instead of heading to the resort, he drove straight to Emma's temporary residence.
"You two live together?"
Travis leaned against the doorframe, noting that the second bedroom looked completely untouched.
Emma felt a nervous prickle at the back of her neck and gave a slow nod.
"Travis, we're married," she said softly.
Travis let out a cold scoff.
"Still trying to fool me? Do I look like Julian to you?"
Sensing the tension, Carter stood up and stepped protectively in front of Emma. "We are legally married."
Hearing her plead, Travis figured it had to do with the Lockwoods.
He sighed and stood up. "Fine, I won't pry. But I don't feel safe leaving you here. You're coming with me."
Carter desperately wanted to keep Emma close, but he could tell this guy was incredibly possessive of her.
He discreetly signaled to Jeff, who hurried forward.
"We actually have a massive multi-room villa available right next door. Why don't we all move in there? When Julian arrives, it'll be convenient for all of you to stay under one roof," Jeff offered bravely.
Carter immediately chimed in. "Plus, I hired the caregiver who used to look after Emma before she went abroad. Her stomach issues flared up recently, so she needs proper meals to recover."
Travis, who had been completely unmoved seconds before, instantly looked deeply concerned at the mention of her stomach.
"I should have come back sooner. Julian is completely useless."
He then shot Carter a scrutinizing glare.
"Forget the house swap. How about I just take her back to the capital?"
