Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 149

Emma didn't give him an immediate yes. She needed to swing by the Reynolds estate to check on the fallout first.

Even so, Carter's stomach twisted into knots.

Emma didn't seem nearly as repulsed by Percy anymore.

Thinking back to Sebastian's question—and Emma's brutal, unspoken rejection—Carter's usual arrogant confidence completely evaporated.

After all, during those six brutal years overseas, Percy was the one who had stayed by her side.

Carter subconsciously tightened his grip on her waist. Emma looked up, slightly confused.

"What's wrong?"

He snapped back to reality, his jaw tightening. "Nothing. Just... get some rest."

Carter desperately wanted to ask what was going on between her and Percy, but the words withered in his throat. He was terrified to ask.

Emma seemed cold and untouchable, but she was fiercely loyal to those she cared about.

If her marriage to Carter truly was just a petty revenge plot against Percy, bringing it up would destroy the illusion. If he shattered this fragile peace, he wouldn't even have an excuse to hold her anymore.

Emma didn't push it, letting the silence stretch.

She soon drifted off to sleep, leaning comfortably against Carter's chest. Looking down at her peaceful face, Carter's dark eyes softened with tragic devotion.

A lie, a dream—it didn't matter.

He was more than willing to drown in it. Even if he was just a prop in her play, he'd act the part flawlessly.

By the time the car rolled to a stop, Emma was awake.

"I called Julian when we reached the city limits. Everyone is waiting at the restaurant."

Carter lifted her out of the car and settled her gently into the wheelchair, draping a soft blanket over her legs.

The entire restaurant had been cleared out. Only the Vance, Lockwood, and Ryder families remained.
