The moment the words left Emma's mouth, Charles and Violet Lockwood tensed.
Terrified she was going to publicly force the Lockwood family to accept Mavis for Tristan, they immediately cut her off.
"Emma, this is a major family matter. You shouldn't interfere," Violet urged, frantically trying to shut her down. She worried Emma didn't understand the complexities of high-society marriages and would ruin Tristan's future out of spite. After all, Emma had recklessly eloped with Carter Harrington. What did she know about strategic alliances?
Charles nodded firmly. "Exactly. We already have our own plans for Tristan's marriage."
But as they finished their scolding, they realized Emma was just staring at them with unfiltered, mocking disgust.
Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds were also looking at the Lockwoods like they had lost their minds.
"Emma, sweetheart, you really just need to focus on healing," Mrs. Reynolds said, shooting a vicious glare at her son, Travis.
"You come back to the country and immediately drag your poor sister into this massive mess."
Charles and Violet froze. Was Emma actually referring to Travis Reynolds' engagement?
Travis ducked his head, grumbling, "How is this my fault? I'm not the one who arranged the damn wedding."
"You little punk—" Mr. Reynolds raised a hand to smack the back of his son's head, but Emma quickly grabbed his arm to stop him.
Before she could say anything, Julian stood up, a deep frown carving into his face.
"Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds, let me handle the rest of this."
The Reynolds parents had only shown up today because they were terrified Julian's rage over Emma's injuries would result in him utterly annihilating the Ryder family.
Even though the marriage was off, the older generation still shared decades of business ties. Driving them to total bankruptcy wasn't a good look.
But with Emma here to keep Julian's lethal temper in check, they nodded and prepared to leave.
"Come over to the house once you're healed! And tell Travis if you ever need money!"
Mrs. Reynolds shot a highly suspicious glare at Carter before marching out the door.
Carter blinked in confusion. Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds seemed to harbor an intense, unprovoked hostility toward him.
Once they were gone, Emma turned her attention back to Mavis's parents.
"So, you lose your shot at marrying into the Reynolds family, and your immediate reaction is to throw your own daughter in the trash? Or was this just a pathetic, desperate pivot to see if the Lockwoods would take the bait so you could still secure a rich in-law?"
Emma lifted her chin, leveling a deeply condescending stare at the Ryders.
"Emma Lockwood, what are you talking about?" Mavis suddenly stood up from the corner, instinctively trying to defend her awful parents.
Emma met her gaze, her eyes dark and unreadable.
"You're misunderstanding us! We were just furious that she hurt you. You're the victim here. We are so incredibly sorry. Once you're fully recovered, we will formally visit you to apologize," Mrs. Ryder said with a sickeningly sweet, fake smile. She immediately shot Mavis a look of utter disgust.
