Carter's abrupt departure left both Julian and Travis stunned.
"Did you guys... have a fight?"
Julian was thoroughly confused, as Carter's mood was visibly foul.
Travis, on the other hand, looked thrilled. "Suddenly remembering he has business at the company? If you ask me, he just didn't want to hang out with you. He's probably hoping you head back to the city early so he can slip away."
Mavis looked somewhat guilty. Was it because of her?
Emma watched Carter's retreating figure, finding it equally baffling.
She had originally wanted Carter to accompany her to see Percy, but since he was busy, she would just have to go alone.
The car crash could easily lead to whoever was trying to kill her. This wasn't something she could delay.
"Julian, Travis, you two head back first. I have a personal errand to run."
Neither Julian nor Travis was comfortable letting her leave alone.
"Let Travis go with you, or you're not going at all."
Julian took a firm stance. There was no way he was letting her run errands by herself right after a kidnapping attempt, especially while she was still injured.
She was confined to a wheelchair, for crying out loud. How could she not have an escort?
Knowing Julian's unyielding nature, Emma had no choice but to agree.
Travis accompanied Emma to the agreed-upon restaurant. The moment he saw Percy, he flared up in rage.
"That bastard still has the nerve to see you."
He rolled up his sleeves and was about to get out of the car when Emma grabbed him.
"Stay in the car and wait for me. Once I find out what I need to know, you can go punch him. It won't be too late."
Emma held Travis back. Uncovering the truth behind the crash was the top priority.
Travis ground his teeth in frustration. "Fine. I'll hold back and not hit him, but you have to let me go with you."
"Let Chase go in with me. Your combat skills aren't as good as his anyway."
Emma was genuinely afraid Travis and Percy would get into a brawl. Travis's temper was like a powder keg, ready to explode at the slightest spark.
Emma gave him a strange look. What was wrong with Percy today? Since when did he care if she had eaten?
"Chase, go order some food. Have the servers bring it in when it's ready."
Emma looked at her bodyguard, who immediately nodded. He stationed the other two men behind Emma before stepping out to handle the food.
Percy pursed his lips, taking a long moment before speaking again.
"I've been reflecting a lot lately on how things got this bad between us, and I realized we've seriously lacked communication."
Emma let out an amused, mocking laugh.
"Percy, spare me the pointless talk. You know exactly why I'm meeting you."
Hearing her cold, distant tone sent a sharp pang through Percy's chest.
"Em, we grew up together. We dated for six years. Even if you hate me, despise me, and are furious with me right now, can you at least look back on those six years we spent together and give me one chance to talk this through?"
"Just this once. Let me finish. No matter what you think afterward, I won't bring it up again."
