Before Jeff could even finish, Carter pulled the door open.
"Let's go."
Smelling strongly of smoke, Carter's face had returned to its usual composed and aristocratic expression.
Jeff breathed a sigh of relief. He had been genuinely worried his boss would overthink things and smoke himself to death in there.
Inside the private room, Emma looked at Percy with a blank expression.
"I appreciate the care and company you gave me over those six years, which is why we can still part ways somewhat amicably. Otherwise, did you really think my two senior colleagues rushed back to the country and completely ignored the canceled engagement because they didn't want to get involved?"
Emma was incredibly clear-headed.
Percy had taken care of her and kept her company, and perhaps, in the very beginning, their feelings for each other were genuine.
But the way it all ended was truly ugly.
She had stopped Julian and Travis from going after Percy, and she hadn't demanded the Harrington family give an explanation for the canceled engagement. She had done more than enough.
"I only came today to get the family information of the driver responsible for the crash. If your information can't help me uncover more clues about the kidnapping, then I don't think we have anything else to discuss."
Emma watched him quietly. She had completely let Percy go the moment he claimed all their past affection was just for the sake of the arranged marriage.
So now, she wasn't going to waver.
"Is it because of Carter that you refuse to forgive me?" Percy asked, still refusing to give up.
Emma shook her head. "It has nothing to do with him. I won't forgive you simply because your actions aren't worth my forgiveness."
She spoke coldly just as Chase wheeled the food into the room.
Regret washed over Percy. Had he known things would turn out like this, he never would have chosen such a childish way to push her away.
But he had genuinely believed their six years of affection were unbreakable, and that Emma could never truly leave him.
In the end, he was simply too arrogant.
"Let's eat first. I'll give you the flash drive after."
He sat back down, feeling defeated. Seeing that Emma was eating without a single trace of emotion, he finally asked the question that had been burning in his chest.
"Do you like my cousin?"
Emma lowered her eyes, subconsciously pondering the question.
Did she?
She wasn't even sure how she defined 'like'.
Percy was her first love, but she had only been with him because he was the man she was supposed to marry in the future. She had never really considered whether she liked him or not.
Percy's feelings toward his uncle weren't as complicated as his cousin's, so he could view the situation calmly as a bystander.
Emma was immediately on high alert.
Could it be related to Pamela?
"What do you think of your Aunt Pamela?" Emma asked.
Seeing her initiate a conversation, a hint of joy sparked in Percy's eyes.
"Aunt Pamela might not come from a great background, and she's been married before without any real connections, but she graduated from a top university. She's kind, gentle, and very dedicated to Uncle Raymond. She's a good person."
Percy paused, looking a bit surprised. "You don't suspect her, do you? It'd make more sense to suspect Uncle Raymond. He was originally the head of the Harrington family, but his future was cut short because of Carter. He treats my cousin like his own son, so of course he wouldn't accept it when you suddenly married him."
Emma nodded. Pamela's reputation was indeed flawless; she was considered one of the absolute best among the elite socialite wives.
But something just didn't sit right with her, even though she couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was.
Emma sat in her wheelchair, lost in thought, completely oblivious to the fact that it was Percy who was pushing her from behind.
Carter, who had been waiting at the entrance the entire time, watched the scene with a darkening gaze.
"Honey, I'm here to take you home."
