Terrified of being caught, Carter acted entirely guilty that night while applying Emma's medication, constantly avoiding her direct gaze.
Emma didn't think much of it, and when Carter said he was going to bed after he finished, she didn't suspect a thing.
Once Carter left, she pulled out her laptop and sent all the files from the flash drive over to VP Levi.
The next day.
Carter applied her medication as usual and passed the instructions along to Martha, who had just arrived.
"I'm heading to the office."
Carter was incredibly reluctant to leave. Even though the injury on his back was the perfect excuse to stay home, he didn't want Emma probing into his busted lip.
Worried she might think he was some kind of creep, he had no choice but to sigh internally and head to work.
"Boss, we have new developments regarding the car crash and your wife's kidnapping."
Carter thought for a moment. "Send a copy to both her and Julian."
Back at the apartment, Emma was also keeping an eye on the situation.
VP Levi arrived with some fruit, sat on the sofa, and dropped a stack of documents onto the coffee table.
"Two people died in the accident: the truck driver, Darren Yates, and the sedan driver, Kyle Yardley. Both of them shared a common trait—they were drowning in debt due to gambling."
Flipping through the files, Emma noticed something.
"According to the information Carter provided, Darren Yates's wife received an unexplained transfer of half a million dollars. However, there's absolutely nothing in the accounts of Kyle Yardley's wife or family."
As VP Levi continued, Emma nodded slightly; that was exactly what had caught her attention.
A heavy truck had no business being on a cordoned-off mountain road reserved for racing, and now there was this highly suspicious money transfer.
"Which means Darren Yates likely knew he was going there to hit someone. He just didn't expect to die in the process."
