While Emma was mulling it over, Carter's confidence crumbled.
Travis was her senior; his place in her heart was undoubtedly far more secure than his own.
Refusing to wait for her answer, Carter plastered on an effortlessly calm facade and stepped out of the shadows.
"Honey, what are you doing out here?"
He walked over smoothly, slipping an arm around Emma's waist in a casual but blatant display of territorial dominance.
Travis glared at Carter's hand with pure hostility, thoroughly pissed off.
"Just catching up with my brother. We're heading to Garrison tomorrow, and I was thinking—"
Before Emma could finish, Carter expertly cut her off.
"I've already handled the bulk of my corporate meetings, and I can manage the rest remotely. Don't worry."
Hearing that, Emma couldn't exactly un-invite him.
After a moment's thought, she nodded. "Alright. My brother is coming with us too."
"Perfect. I'll have someone book two rooms."
Carter acted like the ultimate man of the house, doing everything in his power to flex his legally wedded status.
Travis let out a frigid sneer. "Fine. I'll come find you tomorrow."
With a dismissive wave, he stalked off.
Carter let out an internal breath of relief.
Thank God he had reacted fast enough, otherwise he would have been left alone in his empty bed in the city.
"Want to go back inside and have some fun? Being stuck in the hospital must have been excruciatingly boring."
Carter asked softly, completely unhurried about taking Emma home.
He wanted her to fully relax and enjoy herself.
Emma nodded. Seeing Carter extend his hand, she naturally rested hers against his, completely accustomed to his attentive care.
Over the past few weeks, his pampering had become her new normal.
"Scarlett, why do you keep dragging Tiffany into our issues? I told you, she's just like a sister to me! Can you stop being so ridiculously petty?"
The second Emma and Carter walked back inside, they heard Dominic's impatient, scolding tone.
Carter's expression instantly darkened into pure ice.
