Jeff called Emma right on cue.
Given the exhausting events of the day, she immediately agreed to head back.
Travis had no choice but to escort her to the hotel.
"I grabbed some spicy street food. Do you want to try it? I'm not sure if you're used to this kind of stuff."
Emma placed the takeout containers on the table just as Carter walked out of the bathroom carrying a basin of warm water.
"I can handle it. You walked a lot today; the doctor said soaking your feet will help your recovery."
Emma thanked him politely. Carter sat beside her and casually picked up a skewer.
After one bite, he violently furrowed his brows.
Seeing his face scrunch up, Emma laughed. "Too spicy for you?"
"No."
Carter sucked in a sharp breath. The food was brutally spicy.
But unwilling to ruin Emma's good mood, he forced a straight face and bravely took another bite.
"If you can't handle it, don't eat it. You don't have to force yourself."
Emma warned, noticing his strained expression.
"I'm fine. It's delicious."
Carter lied, taking another huge bite of the spicy skewer just to prove his point.
After chewing for a few seconds, his entire face and neck flushed deep red. Tears even welled up in his eyes.
"Stop eating. Let me get you some milk."
Emma stood up to find a drink, but Carter waved her off, stubbornly holding his ground. "I'm fine. It's really not that spicy."
Carter's sheer stubbornness resulted in a vicious stomach ache in the middle of the night.
Cold sweat drenched his forehead as excruciating cramps tore through him. He occasionally let out a muffled groan, practically biting his blanket to keep quiet so he wouldn't wake Emma.
Just as the pain reached a blinding peak and he debated calling Jeff for help, a warm hand slipped under his covers.
"Don't move. Let me massage your stomach."
