Emma made Carter drink his medicine and waited until he drifted back into a restless sleep before taking her phone into the living room. She dialed the number that sent the text.

"I'm Brenda Yates, Darren Yates's widow. I imagine you're very interested in what happened to my husband. If you want, we can meet right now."

Emma thought for a moment and agreed.

Under the pitch-black pre-dawn sky, she had her driver take her to the Abandoned Bus Station.

The station was entirely desolate. No one was in sight.

Emma waited in silence for about twenty minutes. Chase grew concerned.

"Could this be a trap? Why don't my men and I stay here while you head back?"

Emma pulled out her phone and dialed the number again.

The call connected, but there was only dead silence on the other end.

Emma remained quiet as well. Five seconds later, the call disconnected.

"Send two men to the police station to look into Brenda Yates. I think something happened to her."

Emma frowned deeply. The fact that the call connected without a word likely meant someone was waiting for her to speak, trying to figure out who Brenda had contacted.

If it had been an accidental pocket dial, there would have been background noise. But the line was eerily silent.

Emma got back into the car. She leaned against the seat and, after an unknown amount of time, drifted into a light sleep.

When Carter woke up, he instinctively pressed a hand to his stomach. He opened his eyes and saw the neighboring bed was empty.

He bolted upright, scanning the room, but Emma was nowhere to be found.

A spike of panic hit his chest. He grabbed his phone and called her.

Hearing Emma's slightly groggy voice, relief washed over him.

"Where are you? I'm coming to get you."

Emma rubbed her temples, checking the time. "Just meet me at the police station."

She shook off her fatigue, hung up the phone, and rolled down the car window.

"Any updates?"

Chase shook his head. "No one showed up all night. The police cooperated and checked the traffic cameras. Brenda Yates left her house and walked into an alley without camera coverage. We can't track her movements after that."
