Hayden's grandfather had lost his temper when he heard the Harringtons were still forcing Emma Lockwood to play nursemaid for Percy Harrington.
The elderly man stormed right into the Harrington estate and, without wasting his breath on pleasantries, dropped one word.
"Divorce."
Douglas Harrington looked baffled. "What is this all about?"
"Don't play dumb with me. Our Emma married Carter, and if the two of them didn't want a wedding, fine. But did your family even consider throwing a banquet to make it official?
"Not only was there no wedding reception, but you actually expected Emma to act as a caregiver for her brother-in-law. Where is your family's sense of decency?"
Elder Shaw blasted them mercilessly. Douglas's face turned grim.
"What caregiver?"
Douglas hadn't known a thing about the incidents in Garrison City. Elder Shaw glanced at his butler, who promptly relayed everything that had happened there recently, sparing no details.
He heavily emphasized how Raymond had threatened Emma and Carter.
"Whoever holds power in your family is none of our business, but bullying that girl is where I draw the line!"
Elder Shaw declared fiercely. He gave Douglas a measuring look and added,
"If the Harringtons don't value Emma, then have them sign the divorce papers immediately so she can marry into our family. It's not like we don't have men worthy of her."
Elder Shaw deliberately glanced at Hayden, giving him a thorough once-over before concluding that his grandson was in no way inferior to Carter.
Hearing this, Douglas panicked. "Everything else is just a misunderstanding, but since when do you waltz into my house to steal my grandson's wife? A divorce is something you need to discuss with the people actually involved, right?"
With a few carefully chosen words, Douglas managed to convince Elder Shaw to temporarily stay at the Harrington estate.
Meanwhile, Douglas frantically dialed Carter and Emma, urging them to return immediately.
Emma, however, wasn't in any rush. When Carter picked her up, she was still en route to the Reynolds Construction Site.
"What do you think of Hayden?"
Carter tested the waters, his voice lacking its usual confidence.
Emma had far too many options.
There was Travis, who understood her and whom she clearly relied on.
There was Percy, who had stayed by her side during the darkest, lowest point of her life.
And now there was Hayden, stepping up on his family's strict orders.
Carter felt like he... really had no advantage at all.
Dropping those words, Emma turned on her heel and headed straight for the construction site.
Flustered and angry, Tristan chased after her, blocking her path.
"Emma, I don't care how close you are to the Reynolds family, there's no need for you to meddle in their mess, is there? That place is swarming with families demanding compensation. You'd better not go in there and cause more trouble for Travis."
Tristan's tone was vicious, making it sound as if Emma were nothing but a burden.
"Just take those paintings inside. You drew them, after all. If you want them gone, deal with them yourself."
Tristan pressed his lips together. He was practically begging her to meet him halfway. Surely she could accept the gesture now, couldn't she?
He had watched her paint so many of those canvases. When she painted, her face had always been lit up with a peaceful, radiant smile.
But when Tristan looked at Emma now, that radiant smile was replaced with pure annoyance.
Emma frowned, her voice dripping with exhaustion and disgust.
"Since the second young master of the Lockwoods can't afford a cleaning service, I suppose I'll have to do you a favor and find one."
With that, she turned to Chase.
"Hire some cleaners. Tell them to throw away everything Tristan Lockwood doesn't want."
