Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 191

Emma Lockwood continued asking questions for a little while longer, but after realizing she wouldn't get any new information, she cooperated and underwent the ultrasound.

Coincidentally, Pamela Palmer and Raymond Harrington seemed to have finished their appointments as well, and the two groups bumped into each other on their way out of the hospital.

"What did the doctor say?"

Pamela asked with genuine concern. Emma felt a little awkward, but Carter Harrington answered for her. "She isn't pregnant. It's just stomach issues."

"That's good news, I suppose." Pamela sighed, a mix of regret and relief in her tone. "Otherwise, having a baby you can't keep would only make you suffer in the end."

Emma gave a subtle nod. Pamela then turned to Carter, lecturing him like a stern parent. "Since Emma hasn't been in good health lately, you need to take proper care of her. If you aren't planning on having kids, be responsible and take precautions. You owe that much to Emma."

"I know," Carter replied evenly.

The four of them suddenly ran out of things to say, leaving the atmosphere thick with awkward tension.

Just as Carter was about to lead Emma away, Raymond cleared his throat.

"Do you have any other business in Garrison City? If not, head back to the capital. I've been managing the company for you long enough; it's time you took the reins again."

Raymond pressed his lips together, essentially offering Carter a subtle olive branch.

When Carter remained silent, Raymond turned his head, visibly displeased.

"Gillian won't be allowed at the Harrington estate anymore, and I'll warn Percy to stop entertaining thoughts he shouldn't."

Raymond lowered his head. The Harrington Group was no longer the same empire it had been five or six years ago, and abruptly managing it all had left him feeling stretched thin.

Carter gave a slight nod. "It depends on what Emma wants."

"I'm going to head back after I make one more trip to Lockwood Pharma," Emma stated, making her stance clear. She didn't want Carter and Raymond at each other's throats, especially not over her.

"Figure it out yourselves."

Raymond waved them off and was wheeled away by his assistant.

Emma stood rooted to the spot. She didn't move until their car pulled away, and only then did she pull out her phone.

"Keep an eye on them. Make sure their car actually leaves Garrison."

As she gave the order, Carter frowned slightly.

"You still suspect my uncle?"

Emma looked at him, ignoring his question and firing back one of her own. "You mentioned Raymond was injured because you were attacked. Where exactly were you kidnapped, and which hospital did he go to for checkups after his injury?"

Carter pressed his lips together tightly, caught off guard by her interrogation.

"Emma, if my uncle wanted to hurt you, he wouldn't need to use such complicated methods. The Harringtons aren't short on resources."

All he wanted right now was for Emma and Raymond to stop treating each other like enemies. He was willing to trust Emma unconditionally and stand by her side, but that didn't mean he would completely disregard his gratitude to his family just for love.

Trying to reason with her, Carter urged softly, "My uncle has no grudge against you. Even if he doesn't like you and wants us to divorce, he's never actually done anything to harm you. As for the issue with your background—"

He stopped abruptly mid-sentence. If Emma was no longer suspecting Pamela, did that mean she was preparing to divorce him?

"Forget it. Let's just go back to the hotel."
