"Martha, take some time off. I have someone else managing the house for now. Rest up. You'll still get your full salary."

After all, losing her son like that—a parent burying their child—how could she possibly be in the mood to work?

"I'm fine. I've recovered. There are some pastries in the kitchen; would you like some?"

She placed a tray of desserts on the table. Emma picked one up, about to take a bite, but frowned slightly.

"By the way, Martha, a kitchen knife went missing from the apartment. Do you know anything about that?"

Emma recalled that she had indeed used that knife to cut the cake that day.

"Did something happen?" Martha asked nervously.

Emma shook her head. "Nothing's wrong. Just listen to me for the next few days. Don't do any work. Get some good rest. I'm giving you time off."

Martha nodded but didn't leave the living room.

Carter was just about to eat a pastry. Just as Emma reached out to grab his arm to stop him, Travis walked in.
