Martha didn't want to believe it, but the dashcam footage looping endlessly before her eyes forced her to.
Kyle knew.
He had participated in Emma's kidnapping purely for the money right from the start.
And Emma had even warned him, but he hadn't listened.
Martha instantly collapsed to the floor. Travis waved to the bodyguards rushing in.
"Take her away. Send her to the Garrison City police and tell them there's a new development in Brenda's murder case."
Emma's expression was complicated. As Martha was dragged up by her arms, she sobbed apologetically, "I'm... I'm so sorry, Emma."
"I understand, but I won't forgive you."
She turned her back, refusing to look at Martha again.
It wasn't until the woman was taken out of the villa that Travis spoke up. "Why bother understanding her? She's the nanny who raised you since childhood. Doesn't she know your character? To quietly plot to frame you like that... Don't worry, I'll make sure she pays for it."
"Don't."
Emma's tone was laced with pity.
"Martha's life has already been hard enough. She was manipulated into framing me, and the grief of losing a child is enough to drive anyone mad."
She knew the hardships Martha had endured in the first half of her life, which only made her feel more sympathetic.
"But you can have the police interrogate her thoroughly to find out exactly who manipulated her into doing this. Also, those pastries... send them to the lab to see what's in them."
Emma was visibly drained and despondent. Travis's heart ached just looking at her.
"Let's put the raw materials issue on hold for now. Get some proper rest."
Travis pressed his lips together, shooting a sideways glance at Carter. "Walk me out."
Carter nodded and walked him downstairs. Travis didn't speak until they reached the door.
"Take her out to have some fun. Ever since she went abroad, she hasn't had a single day to relax, and now this happens. She values loyalty above all else. Being betrayed by someone she trusted is tearing her apart inside."
Travis narrowed his eyes in frustration. Though he desperately wanted to be the one to help her unwind, he knew he didn't have the power to do so.
He had noticed that Emma only subconsciously let her guard down when she was around Carter.
A fact that perhaps even she hadn't realized yet.
"I know."
Carter was secretly thrilled.
If Travis had any other option, he never would have asked him to be the one to comfort Emma.
