Emma's face flushed instantly, and she pushed against Carter in protest.
Carter smirked, gently setting her down on the bed and reaching for the tie of her dress.
"You—"
Before she could even grab his hand, Carter let out a low chuckle.
"I'm just checking your injuries. It's better to apply some medicine to prevent a relapse."
He then added playfully, "So, what exactly were you thinking I was going to do?"
Emma's face burned even hotter.
She couldn't exactly admit that her mind had been in the gutter.
That would be too humiliating.
Emma turned her head away, refusing to look at him. Carter didn't tease her any further, afraid of actually making her mad.
With Levi hospitalized, Emma didn't sit idle. She went to the office the next day, and Sebastian arrived at the same time.
"I heard about your nanny..." Sebastian asked with concern. "Do you want me to find you a new one?"
Emma shook her head. "Carter already arranged some reliable staff. Thanks, Sebastian."
"Don't mention it. If there's anything I can help with, just say the word."
Sebastian genuinely cared for his cousin and wanted to help her out as much as possible.
Emma acknowledged his offer and pulled out the business plan and investment proposal for the medicinal oil plant.
Sebastian was about to sign the contract without even glancing at it. Emma asked with a smile, "Aren't you going to read it first?"
"No need." Sebastian signed his name with a flourish, talking as he wrote. "Actually, our grandfather always intended to bring the Jennings Medicated Elixir to the market. He just wanted to wait until you took over Jennings Pharma before giving you the recipe."
But then Gillian had returned to the Lockwoods, and his cousin had been exiled abroad, so the plan was dropped.
Gillian arrogantly stormed into the office, with Charles following right behind her.
"Sebastian, how could you give our family's ancestral elixir recipe to an outsider like Emma? Grandfather is senile, but are you losing your mind too?"
Gillian snapped defensively. Sebastian frowned at her. "You just called it the Jennings family's elixir. Doesn't that mean we can give it to whoever we want?"
"CFT is headquartered overseas. Emma is just working for foreigners. Giving her the recipe is practically treason!"
Gillian threw out a heavy accusation. Charles looked at Emma at the same time.
"Gillian is right. An ancestral Jennings recipe shouldn't become a foreign brand."
Charles didn't lose his temper this time. Instead, he spoke with calm logic. "If you want to license it, why not do it under the Lockwood Group's name? That way, you fulfill your grandfather's wish, and we don't have to worry about the elixir becoming a foreign commodity."
Emma watched him in silence. Seeing her lack of response, Gillian's anger flared again.
"Emma, you played coy, but then turned around and contacted Sebastian to build a factory. I bet you're just trying to take the recipe out of the country!"
