With just a few sentences, Carter had Marian laughing in delight. She reminded them to move in together immediately before happily hanging up.
Since Winifred was still standing there, Emma pressed her lips together and stayed quiet.
Once the nanny left the room, Emma narrowed her eyes at Carter.
"Moving back in together?"
Carter kept his expression entirely serious. "Word about our hospital visit has already spread. Someone is bound to bring it up to Marian. If she tells people we have no intention of having kids, and that gets back to my family, it'll just cause another massive headache."
Emma had to admit his logic made sense.
The Harringtons were undoubtedly waiting for an heir, and the elders on her side were equally eager for a baby to spoil.
If word got out that they didn't want kids, they would be subjected to endless lectures from every relative.
"I'll take the floor. The nanny won't just barge into the room anyway. It's just an act to keep up appearances, so you'll have to put up with me."
Carter sounded so completely focused on the bigger picture that Emma couldn't find a reason to argue.
Besides, they had already seen everything there was to see of each other, and it wasn't like they hadn't shared a room before. Given how suspicious Uncle Raymond had been acting lately, it was better to avoid any unnecessary drama.
"Fine, let's move you in."
Carter was secretly thrilled. Having Marian as a mother-in-law was turning out to be the greatest blessing of his life.
He happily jogged downstairs to grab his blankets from his old room.
"Let me get that for you, Carter."
Winifred rushed over to help, but Carter shook his head with a charming smile. "It's fine, Winifred. Go ahead and tend to your other chores. I've got this."
Carter had never made a bed in his life, but during the time he spent caring for Emma at the hospital, he had learned how to do almost everything.
He laid his blankets down right next to Emma's bed. The more he looked at the setup, the more satisfied he felt, even snapping a quick picture on his phone.
Winifred watched the entire scene from the doorway before turning and heading straight for the kitchen.
Just as Emma was getting ready for bed, Winifred came upstairs carrying a tray with two bowls of soup.
"Emma, Marian specifically asked me to prepare this. You and Carter are to drink it every night before bed to build up your strength."
Emma took one whiff of the broth and her expression stiffened.
It was definitely meant to build strength.
