Carter fixed Tim with a predatory glare.
Tim glanced at Emma. If these two ended up fighting because of him, he would be the one paying the price.
"N-Nothing," he stammered, trying to cover for her.
Emma cut right to the chase. "I need a VIP membership card. Expedite it."
Hearing her blatantly ask for VIP access, Carter remembered that when Harvey had spiked her drink, her first instinct had been to run to this exact club.
A wave of jealousy and defeat washed over him.
Was he really not as appealing as the VIP hosts here?
"The one who booked the private room today is his sister," Emma said. "Next time she comes, make sure your people take good care of her. Pick some smart ones who know how to behave, and don't let anything happen to her on your turf."
Emma arched an eyebrow. It wasn't uncommon for male hosts to cling to wealthy women. Scarlett didn't exactly seem like the brightest bulb, and Emma didn't want her getting played by some smooth-talking entertainer.
Carter looked slightly stunned, then felt a flash of self-contempt.
He really needed to have more faith in Emma.
"Your sister is my sister. I'll make sure she's treated like royalty, don't worry."
Tim finally understood what kind of card she was asking for. She wanted a black card that signaled to everyone in the club that the holder was untouchable.
Emma nodded. "No need to walk us out."
Another week passed, and Emma's injuries were completely healed.
She couldn't wait to try on her newly purchased heels, but Carter still hovered nervously.
"Are you sure you can wear those now? You should rest a little longer."
Even though she was attending the bidding for a national research project tomorrow, Carter felt her health should be the top priority.
"I'm really fine." Emma did a quick spin in front of the mirror. "Besides, if you're too busy with the company, I can go by myself. VP Levi and Sebastian will be there tomorrow."
"Sightseeing gets old anyway. Emma, honey, I heard you went for a check-up recently. Now that you're fully recovered, have you thought about when you want to have a baby?"
Emma froze. Where did this come from?
"Winifred told me you and Carter are still sleeping in separate rooms. That won't do! What kind of newlyweds sleep apart? You've been married for a while now; it's time to start a family."
Emma was speechless. How did her godmother find out about the hospital visit?
"You're young, so having a baby early is better for your body. It's not like we can't afford to raise one! Besides, Carter will be hitting thirty in a few years. A man's prime is short. He's very disciplined, sure, but sooner is always better than later. You're a doctor, you know this."
Marian's logic was airtight. Emma awkwardly reached out to turn off the speakerphone.
Fighting back a grin, Carter moved the heels aside and snatched the phone away.
"Mom, Emma and I only slept in separate rooms because she was injured. We're actually moving back into the same room right now. Once she's fully rested, we'll definitely think about having kids."
Carter said it so smoothly that Emma's eyes widened. How could he just lie to Marian like that?
