When Emma walked out in her fresh clothes, Julian gave her a quick look before issuing a single directive to Carter.
"Take it easy on her shoulder, Carter."
Emma blushed deeply but didn't bother trying to explain. Instead, she looked at Carter. "Tell Winifred to stop brewing those herbal aphrodisiacs."
Carter was secretly thrilled that she hadn't denied the implications.
Julian nodded. "I'll speak with the nanny."
As they walked out of the ward, a nurse approached them.
"Dr. Ann, would you like to check on Tiffany Yale's post-op status?"
Emma frowned. "Is she awake?"
"She is, but she hasn't said a word since she regained consciousness."
Emma immediately headed down to Tiffany's room. Victoria was sitting by the bed, accompanied by two hospital caregivers.
"Ms. Lockwood, I don't know how to thank you."
Victoria was practically in tears. Hearing her mother speak, Tiffany finally turned her head, as if reacting for the first time.
"Mom, you and the nurses need to leave."
It was the first thing she had said since the surgery.
Emma's eyes flashed with caution. Tiffany noticed the guard go up and added, "Carter and the others can stay if you want."
Emma considered this for a moment before deciding to only keep Carter with her.
"You guys go ahead," Emma told Julian and Travis. "We'll meet you at the restaurant."
Travis looked visibly irritated and stormed off without a word.
Julian didn't linger either; he still needed to handle the press control.
"What do you want to talk about?" Emma maintained a safe distance from the bed.
Tiffany struggled to sit up. Seeing this, Emma stepped over and adjusted the bed controls.
"Thank you." Tiffany's tone was polite, completely stripped of her usual arrogance.
Emma watched her silently. Tiffany bit her lip. "I'm sorry for provoking you before."
"Don't worry about it. You didn't even phase me."
Emma was as calm as glass. Tiffany bit her lip harder. "Dominic was the one who bribed your VP's assistant to steal your research."
"I know. The assistant is already in custody."
Emma suddenly thought back to the mugging.
Dominic stared at Emma with calculating eyes. He hadn't expected her to be this skilled. She had miraculously salvaged a leg he had practically ground into dust.
Emma arched an eyebrow and completely ignored him.
"The nurses will go over your post-op care shortly. If there's nothing else, I'm leaving."
Tiffany nodded, watching them walk out.
Dominic waited a moment before shutting the door behind them.
"Tiffany, you don't hate me for what I did, do you?" Dominic reached out, stroking her cast.
Tiffany shook her head. "I know you have your plans. Besides, I'm fine now, aren't I?"
"I knew you'd understand." Dominic smiled, practically radiating arrogance.
He viewed Tiffany as nothing more than a gold digger. She relied on his money, so she wouldn't—and couldn't—hold a grudge.
"You really should be thanking me. If I hadn't forced Emma to do the surgery, you definitely would have lost that leg."
Tiffany looked down, masking the lethal fury burning in her eyes.
Completely oblivious, Dominic kept staring at her cast, smirking.
"I need you to get close to Emma over the next few weeks. Make her think you've turned on me. Understand?"
