News of Emma's miraculous surgery quickly spread.
Douglas was the first to act, immediately summoning her back to the Harrington estate.
"Emma, I had no idea your orthopedic skills were so elite. If it's not too much trouble, do you think you could take a look at Raymond's legs?"
Pamela lit up at the suggestion.
"You mentioned before that you knew some top-tier specialists, but we had no idea you were a master yourself! It would be an absolute miracle if you could heal Raymond."
While Pamela looked thrilled, Raymond's face was a mask of cold fury.
"No."
He rejected the idea instantly. "I know exactly what condition my legs are in."
He had seen countless doctors over the years. If there was even a shred of hope, he would have taken it.
The thought of being treated like a slab of meat, poked and proded by another doctor, infuriated him.
"Emma is brilliant, Raymond. Just let her take a look," Pamela coaxed.
Raymond's tone remained icy. "I said no."
"Emma, don't mind your uncle. He's just stubborn," Pamela said, flashing Emma an apologetic smile.
Emma shook her head, though her mind was racing.
Normally, a paralyzed patient would grasp at any sliver of hope. Why was Raymond rejecting her so aggressively?
She studied him closely. Just then, Pamela gestured for her to step away.
"Emma, could I have a private word?"
Emma nodded and followed her down the hall.
"I heard about the stunt Gillian pulled today. I am so incredibly sorry."
Pamela looked genuinely remorseful.
Pamela told the story like it was an amusing anecdote from their youth, but Emma's heart skipped a beat.
Was that really the truth behind their college romance?
"You're loyal to a fault, Emma. A soft heart that remembers every kindness. You are exactly like your mother. Because of that, you'll never truly be able to cut ties with the Lockwoods. Sometimes, it's better to just treat these things as family disputes. Don't you think?"
Pamela's words were meticulously woven, and Emma genuinely felt some of the lingering resentment dissolve.
She felt like Pamela truly understood her.
"I hear you. But Pamela, I still think we should find a way for me to properly examine Uncle Raymond's legs."
Pamela paused, momentarily thrown off by the sudden subject change.
She quickly recovered with a smile. "I'll talk to him. Leave it to me."
She looped her arm through Emma's, guiding her back toward the living room.
"I'll have the Lockwoods come over today to give you a proper apology. But whether they step foot inside the Harrington estate is entirely up to you."
