Emma stopped in her tracks. She turned slowly to meet Sylvia's gaze before her eyes shifted to Tessa, who was huddled in the corner.
"You. Come out here."
Tessa crossed her arms stubbornly. "These are my friends. Why should I leave?"
"Suit yourself."
Emma didn't waste another breath and walked out of the room.
"I've already sent my guys to find your friend," Tim chimed in.
Right on cue, Gillian rushed down the hallway.
"What are you doing here?"
Gillian glared at her, then a look of twisted realization crossed her face.
"I get it now. You're the one who sent Sylvia and her gang to humiliate Phoebe, aren't you? What did Phoebe ever do wrong by liking Owen? Owen and Sylvia don't even have any real feelings for each other!"
She shot Emma a venomous look before desperately demanding to know where Phoebe was.
But Tim's men were already bringing Phoebe down the hall. She was violently shivering, clutching a wine-soaked jacket around her shoulders, a stark, angry handprint burned into her cheek.
"Phoebe!"
Gillian bolted over to her. Seeing Phoebe trembling so pitifully only fueled her rage.
"Emma, you two were best friends for years! Did you really have to be this vicious?"
Phoebe looked up in utter disbelief, her eyes swimming with shock, betrayal, and deep hurt.
The moment Emma saw that expression, she knew—Phoebe actually believed it.
"Emma, I'm letting her go today out of respect for you. But if she ever tries to seduce my fiancé again, I swear to God I'll strip her naked and throw her out on the street."
Sylvia sneered, shooting Phoebe a look of pure, unadulterated disgust.
Phoebe's eyes widened in brief confusion. Was Emma the one who saved her?
Gillian was equally stunned to realize Emma was actually there to rescue Phoebe. But she recovered quickly, wrapping her arms around Phoebe to pull her away. "Come on, Phoebe. Let's get out of here."
Phoebe kept her head down and followed Gillian. As she brushed past Emma, she whispered faintly, "Thank you."
Emma acted as if she hadn't heard a thing. Her gaze was already locked onto a sharply dressed man approaching them.
