Emma tracked Carter down to ask about it. Carter was surprised she had actually remembered.
"Come here."
Carter led her into the bedroom and pulled an ornate box from the safe.
Inside lay five crumpled twenty-dollar bills, along with a few tens and fives.
"Do you remember what you said to me?"
Carter held the box delicately, treating it like a priceless treasure.
Emma shook her head. She only had a vague recollection of the event; the finer details were completely lost to her.
"You said that if I was hungry, I should go to a restaurant. But you couldn't give me all your change because you still had to buy ice cream for the other kids."
Carter's eyes practically sparkled as he repeated her words.
Emma blinked. Was she really that generous with her cash back then?
"So, I met you long before Percy ever did."
Carter pressed his lips together. Although the marriage pact between the two families had been arranged early on, Emma had never actually met Percy before Phoebe was brought into the household.
She had only met Percy's parents and Douglas. At the time, they just thought Emma was adorable and highly favored by the Jennings family. Assuming she would inherit their pharmaceutical empire, they solidified the engagement.
But Carter had been the first to meet her.
"I-I see."
Hearing this, Emma's heart inexplicably skipped a beat, and a blush crept onto her cheeks.
What exactly was Carter trying to imply?
Carter took a deep breath, wanting to seize the moment and pour out everything in his heart. But just then, a poorly timed knock shattered the romantic tension.
"Sir, the guests from the Morton family have arrived."
Carter frowned, visibly annoyed.
"Timothy's family?" Emma asked curiously.
