Emma didn't even glance at Logan, walking straight over to her assistant.
"What's the situation? Didn't you cross-check the guest list when you reissued the invitations?"
The assistant lowered his voice apologetically. "Logan is well-connected. He called in a favor to score an invite. I didn't press too hard on who it was being handed to..."
"It's fine. I get it."
Emma didn't blame him; these kinds of high-society loopholes were common.
She cast a cold, fleeting glance at Logan. Whatever goal they thought they were achieving today was destined to crash and burn.
Soon, the penthouse gallery filled with the elite crowd. Gillian anxiously scanned the room for a foreign face. Finally spotting a blonde, blue-eyed woman smiling near one of the paintings, she rushed over.
"Are you the painter Cecelia? Hello, my name is Gillian Lockwood. I've admired your work for so long, and it's an absolute honor to finally meet you."
Gillian beamed with an overly sweet, perfectly manicured smile. The woman blinked in confusion and replied in rapid English. Phoebe quickly stepped up to translate.
After listening to the woman, Phoebe turned to Gillian with an incredibly awkward expression. "She says we have the wrong person."
Gillian's face darkened as she aggressively scanned the room for other foreigners. Seeing this, Emma casually strolled over.
"You can stop looking."
Assuming Emma was there to gloat, Gillian instantly fired back. "What? Are you terrified I'm going to steal your spotlight? Let me make this crystal clear—I am walking out of here as Cecelia's close friend."
"You won't get the chance."
Emma shook her head. Before she could say another word, Phoebe stepped up to defend Gillian.
"Emma, don't blame Gillian for the gallery issue. She only did it to help my career. If you're angry, take it out on me, but leave her alone."
Phoebe felt overwhelmingly indebted to Gillian. When the Harringtons threw her out onto the street, Gillian had swooped in, buying a gallery just to legitimize her brand.
She knew stealing the venue was a massive betrayal to Emma, but she refused to let Gillian's generosity go to waste.
"Neither of you is worth my anger."
As Emma's words dropped, Logan—who had been admiring a painting—strode over.
