Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 250

Emma worked late into the night. When she finally stepped out of the research facility, she immediately spotted Carter's car parked in the courtyard.

He was leaning casually against the door, a cigarette in hand.

"Have you been waiting here the whole time? You should have texted me! I would have come out earlier."

Emma hurried over. Carter instantly snuffed the cigarette out in a nearby ashtray.

"I wasn't waiting that long. Are you hungry? I had Nanny Winifred prep some late-night snacks at home."

He pulled the passenger door open just as Travis walked out of the shadows.

"I just had one of the nearby villas cleaned and set up. Since you need to keep a close eye on the trials, it makes sense for you to move in there. It's much more convenient."

Emma was about to say yes when a sudden realization hit her. She was a married woman now.

Whether this was just a marriage of convenience or not, to the public, she was Mrs. Harrington. If she suddenly stopped going home to her husband, it would fuel nasty rumors about Carter.

"No thanks, Travis. I'll head home."

Emma stifled a yawn and slid into the car. The light instantly vanished from Travis's eyes.

Carter shut her door, rounded the hood, and shot Travis a triumphant, infuriating smirk before climbing into the driver's seat.

Travis watched them pull away, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles cracked.

By the time they pulled into their driveway, Emma had fallen completely asleep in the passenger seat.

"Emma?"

Carter called her name softly. Getting no response, he carefully unbuckled her seatbelt.

Slipping one strong arm beneath her knees and the other around her back, his movements were agonizingly gentle.

"Hmm? Are we here?"

Emma mumbled, her eyes fighting to open as Carter lifted her out of the car.

"Go back to sleep. We're home."

She let out another sleepy yawn, instinctively nuzzling into the warmth of his chest. "I'm not sleeping... I want my snack."

"Yeah... it was fine. I slept great."

Carter rubbed the bridge of his nose. He really wasn't lying. Sure, his back was killing him, but his wife had held onto his arm the entire night. He was practically over the moon.

Emma shot him an incredibly apologetic look as he stood up. "I'll pack up my bed. Go wash up."

"Okay."

Emma practically ran into the bathroom. Staring at her flushed reflection in the mirror, she aggressively rubbed her cheeks.

How could she have held onto a man all night without letting go?!

Her face was still burning when she walked downstairs. Out of sheer guilt, she personally served Carter his breakfast.

They ate in comfortable, thoughtful silence until a notification on Emma's phone shattered her peace.

[Emma, I know the DNA test is something you desperately want. I'm already on my way to the testing center. Don't worry about Gillian; I talked to her, and she won't make a fuss.]

[I'll be waiting for you at the center.]
