"Ms. Lockwood, a massive fire broke out at that restaurant ten minutes ago. All the evidence at the scene has been destroyed. You are free to go."

The police officer rubbed his temples, dealing with a massive headache. They hadn't had any evidence proving Emma had assaulted anyone to begin with.

Furthermore, the station had dispatch records proving Emma was downstairs dealing with an extortion dispute at the time of the incident.

"But there is some bad news."

The officer offered a grim reminder as Emma prepared to leave.

"Ms. Jennings suffered severe head trauma. Although the hospital managed to stabilize her, the lack of oxygen to her brain means she might remain in a vegetative state forever."

Emma's heart sank heavily. She picked up her pace and hurried out.

"Ms. Lockwood."

Chase immediately rushed up to her the moment she stepped out. Carter watched her in silence; judging from her expression, she already knew the situation at the hospital.

"Which hospital is my mom at?"

Chase scratched his head as Carter opened the car door. "Second Metropolitan Hospital."

Emma didn't say a word and simply climbed into the car.

Carter instructed the driver to head straight to the hospital. By the time they arrived, the Lockwood family was already there.

Gillian glared at her furiously. "What a brilliant move. Openly setting fire to a massive restaurant to destroy the evidence. You really are capable of anything."

"The restaurant fire had nothing to do with me."

Emma looked at her mother lying quietly in the ICU, her eyes instantly welling with tears.

She never should have gone downstairs.

"Besides you, with the Vance, Harrington, and Reynolds families backing you up, who else in this city would have the audacity to start a fire there? You just wanted to cover up the fact that you assaulted her!"

Gillian's eyes brimmed with pure hatred. Knowing Gillian was entirely irrational right now, Emma turned to Logan.

"The DNA report Mom and I saw was completely different from the one left at the scene."

Carter clearly didn't know the full scope of what had happened, but he held Emma's hand, his tone resolute.

Emma inexplicably felt a bit of peace return to her heart. Right at that moment, Daniel Brooks arrived.

"Mr. Lockwood."

Daniel greeted him politely. Logan noticed Emma approaching and asked, "What were the results of the DNA test you conducted today for my mother and Ms. Emma Lockwood?"

Daniel paused, looking taken aback. "The results showed no biological relation. Did Ms. Jennings not make it clear to you? Ms. Jennings even tried to comfort Ms. Lockwood for a long time, but Ms. Lockwood got very emotional. The two of them seemed to get into an argument, and then I left."
