Aside from Carter's parents, everyone in the Harrington living room looked thoroughly displeased.
Emma's words were a blatant threat.
"I don't care whose daughter she is. I only want her," Carter declared, making his stance clear.
Adeline Harrington, however, saw this as the perfect opportunity to drive Emma out.
Her clouded eyes bulged. "Fine! If you choose her, then you can consider me dead!"
Adeline went on a hunger strike.
She stood stubbornly in the family shrine, weeping as she gazed at the Harrington ancestors.
"A century of Harrington legacy is going to be ruined by the younger generation! I have failed you!"
The entire extended family took turns trying to persuade Adeline, then Carter, but both proved entirely immovable.
Out of options, Carter's mother had to seek out Emma.
"Carter is incredibly stubborn, and my hands are tied. Even though our entire family adores you, we can't let anything happen to my mother-in-law. Forcing an elder to their death is a stigma Carter cannot bear, and neither can his father and I."
She grasped Emma's hands tightly. "I hope you can understand."
Emma leaned back into the sofa, her gaze lowered to her phone.
The DNA test results between her and Jean were out. Furthermore, her trusted associate was highly competent and had managed to procure a blood sample from Violet, who was hospitalized at Second Metropolitan Hospital, running a second test.
The results confirmed she was a Lockwood, entirely unrelated to Jean Sutton.
But showing any proof now would be completely useless.
The two forged reports presented to the public acted like the boy who cried wolf, completely shattering the Lockwoods' trust in her.
"I understand what you're saying. I'll bring up the divorce with Carter."
Emma idly toyed with her phone. The impending storm really wasn't something Carter needed to be dragged into.
Yet, when mentioning the divorce, she felt an unexpected pang of reluctance.
"Emma, I know you've been wronged in all of this. If you and Carter truly love each other, there might still be a chance if you wait," his mother offered.
Emma hung up and leaned back into the sofa, closing her eyes in silence.
She couldn't let Carter shoulder the blame of driving his grandmother to her death because of her. That was a debt she could never repay.
A moment later, she sat up and dialed a number on her phone.
"Julian, can you send me the corporate data on Raymond's businesses?"
Julian was busy working, but hearing her request, he asked, "Did the Harringtons piss you off again?"
"They claimed my genetics are flawed. Adeline is on a hunger strike to force Carter to divorce me. While it's too petty of an issue for a fight to the death, I need to carve out a pound of flesh to prove I'm not to be messed with."
Emma raised an eyebrow. She had disliked Raymond for a long time. If it hadn't been for Carter, she would have crushed him the first time he tried to use the family rules against her.
If she didn't make him bleed some capital, she would never swallow this anger.
"Alright. Do you want to handle this yourself?" Julian asked, implying he could do it for her.
Emma's lips curled into a smirk. "Yes. Not only will I do it myself, but I'll do it while stepping right over them."
