Timothy was rushing to board his flight and didn't speak with Emma for long, simply urging her repeatedly to be careful.
"Timothy seems to care about you a lot."
Carter was slightly curious; Timothy was being excessively anxious.
"It's normal. His overseas operations are somewhat shady, and they only stay safe under my brother's protection.
"The Morton family is complicated internally. Timothy's ability to maintain his footing here relies entirely on his foreign ventures. Losing those businesses is like tearing out his foundation."
Emma wasn't surprised at all. Timothy had to care more about her situation than anyone else, given the tangible financial stakes involved.
"Then what he just said is worth considering."
Carter narrowed his eyes. How many people domestically could actually threaten Emma's safety?
"Timothy and I work together. The only way he'd be forced out of the country is if our shared interests took a hit." Emma had known him for years and understood his temper. He wouldn't have gone out of his way to call if it didn't involve her.
Emma thought for a moment, then suddenly asked the driver to pull over.
"What is it?" Seeing her about to get out, Carter quickly grabbed her hand.
Emma offered a soft smile.
"Why should I go with you to the Harrington estate?"
Carter felt a sudden spike of panic at her words, quickly lowering his gaze to hide his fracturing composure.
"I am Emma Lockwood. My senior, Julian Vance, is the eldest of the Vance family, Travis is the only son of the Reynolds family, and Jocelyn is the cherished daughter of the King family. With such a powerful backing, Raymond thinks he can use the Harrington family rules to suppress me?"
A radiant confidence sparked in Emma's eyes. She refused to play the victim.
Carter stared at her, slightly caught off guard. She wasn't bringing up divorce?
"Do me a favor and pass along a message, Carter."
Emma reached out, tracing the line of his jaw with a raised brow.
"If the elders of the Harrington family want to dictate your marriage, then I'll be calling my own elders to the negotiating table."
She gently patted his cheek, then turned and stepped out of the car.
Looking back at his boss, who was still dazed and seemingly savoring the touch, Jeff couldn't help but twitch his lips.
"No, no, that's not necessary," Jean said hastily. "I'm perfectly healthy. Don't waste money on tests."
"The tests are to ensure my safety."
After Emma said that, Jean didn't dare say another word.
This girl was far too intimidating.
Upon arriving at Metropolitan Medical Center, Emma sought out someone she trusted in the lab department.
"During her exam, find a way to get a sample of her blood without alerting anyone. Once you have it, run a DNA test against mine. Text me the results directly when they're ready. Don't print an official report."
The analyst at the testing center, Daniel Brooks, could no longer be trusted.
While Emma was handling these arrangements, Carter returned to the estate and relayed her message.
Raymond's face darkened with fury.
"Does she really think I won't touch her?"
