Emma quickly sat up and signaled Chase to open the door.
Annoyed by the interruption, Carter's expression was naturally sour as he glared at the director.
The director trembled inwardly but plastered on a sycophantic smile. "I'm not sure if our hospital failed you in some way. Why does Mr. Harrington want to be discharged?"
Emma looked at her coldly. "Where did you fail? See for yourself, Director."
She pulled up the photos she had just taken, showing the nurses eagerly tugging at Carter's clothes without an ounce of professional decorum.
The director's eyelid twitched violently. Emma continued, "They even tried to kick me, his wife, out of the room. I had no idea your ECG machines were so top-secret that I couldn't even stand in the room to watch."
The director's heart pounded. As an experienced professional, she knew exactly what those nurses were scheming, but she hadn't expected them to be bold enough to openly cross Emma.
"This is our oversight. The younger nurses are inexperienced and were simply following protocol too rigidly. Please don't take it to heart. I'm sure Mr. Harrington's stay with us has otherwise been quite comfortable."
Hoping Carter would put in a good word, the director practically dragged the head nurse—who had been in the room earlier—forward.
"Hurry up and apologize to Mr. and Mrs. Harrington."
The head nurse looked defiant, playing the victim. "I was only following the rules. In the eyes of a nurse, there are only patients, not men and women. If Ms. Lockwood wants to get catty over another woman, she should really pick a better time and place."
Seeing Carter's lack of response, the director assumed the couple's relationship was rocky and grew bolder.
"Mrs. Harrington, our nurses are incredibly dedicated. They've taken excellent care of Mr. Harrington these past two days. I know a man as exceptional as him must have many women around him, but this is a hospital. Physical contact between a nurse and a patient is inevitable."
Emma's lips curled into a smirk. She held up her phone and played an audio clip of the head nurse pleading in that sickeningly sweet tone earlier.
The color instantly drained from the head nurse's and the director's faces. They hadn't expected Emma to have recorded the exchange.
"Is it just me being a jealous, petty wife? Why don't we post this online and let the internet decide?"
Emma exchanged a subtle, knowing glance with Carter. Their goal was achieved.
However, the suggestion to bring out the hospital director couldn't come from her lips.
"Emma, why don't we give them a chance?" Carter offered the perfect out. "After all, my Uncle Raymond comes to this hospital often, so there must be something special about it."
Understanding Emma's plan perfectly, Carter smoothed the way for her.
Emma remained silent, signaling her tacit agreement.
The department director immediately called Director Courtney. Emma lowered her gaze, hoping this elaborate performance would yield results worth the effort.
While Emma waited for Director Courtney to arrive, Phoebe appeared outside the ward.
"Emma, I'm here to apologize. Do you have a moment?"
