Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 275

Emma stepped into the hallway. For Phoebe to show up in Garrison City right now, claiming she wanted to apologize, felt entirely too coincidental.

"You don't need to apologize for the fashion show. You've already paid the price for your actions."

Emma spoke indifferently. After Phoebe's reckless outburst at the show, every reputable design firm had blacklisted her.

And the offers she got from mediocre firms were far beneath her expectations, leaving Phoebe's future looking bleak and uncertain.

Thinking about the fallout, a wave of profound sorrow washed over Phoebe.

But this wasn't the time to dwell on that.

"I'm not here to talk about that," Phoebe said, pressing her lips together. "Can we talk somewhere else? This isn't the best place."

Emma glanced back into the room at Carter, her gaze darkening. "Tonight. I'm busy right now."

"Then promise you'll call me when you're done."

Phoebe left, and Emma returned to the room. Carter asked in concern, "Why did she come looking for you all of a sudden?"

"I don't know. She mumbled something about wanting to apologize."

Emma found it strange too. What did Phoebe suddenly have to apologize for?

She didn't want to waste energy thinking about it. She glanced sideways at Carter, who was still in his loungewear, and raised an eyebrow. "Going to change your clothes?"

"Yeah."

Carter obediently went into the suite's adjoining bedroom to change, while Emma sat in a chair, scrolling on her phone for nearby food options.

"Hello, I am the hospital director."

A woman in her fifties stood in the doorway. When Emma looked over, she immediately offered a polite smile.

"Ms. Lockwood, I heard our nursing staff was unprofessional and upset you. Please rest assured, the hospital will take disciplinary action. I hope you can overlook this lapse."

Director Courtney's demeanor was immaculate, but Emma's gaze was ice-cold, a dismissive smirk tugging at the corners of her mouth.

"So it's you."

Emma stood up, appearing even angrier than before.

"Director Courtney, we have absolutely nothing left to discuss."

She turned on her heel and started toward the door. Director Courtney, looking thoroughly bewildered, called out, "Mr. Harrington, what's going on?"

"It was undeniably a major medical incident. But we only found out about it a few years ago ourselves. Nurse Marlow, who was complicit in the baby swap, has already passed away. Peacehaven Hospital was shut down because of that exact scandal."

Emma raised an eyebrow. "Peacehaven Hospital was shut down because the baby swap was exposed?"

"Yes. It was even in the local papers. You can look it up yourself if you don't believe me, Ms. Lockwood."

Emma kept her arms crossed, but her expression softened slightly.

She cast a sidelong glance at Carter, who immediately caught on. He slumped forward slightly, leaning against the sofa, and broke into a violent coughing fit.

He coughed until his face turned red. The director figured Emma recognizing her had just been an unlucky coincidence, and her greed for a VIP like Carter flared back to life.

Carter was at the absolute pinnacle of high society in the capital. If word got out that he was recovering at Mercy Private Hospital, their wealthy clientele would skyrocket.

Who would say no to money?

With this in mind, a polite smile crept back onto Director Courtney's face.

"Ms. Lockwood, Mr. Harrington's body desperately needs rest. I'll arrange for male nurses to handle all his check-ups going forward, and I'll personally fire those unprofessional girls. If you have any other requests, please don't hesitate to ask."

"Would that arrangement be acceptable to you?"
