Raymond's gaze darkened at the question. It took a long time for him to answer.
"I know she was the lead surgeon for Gillian's mother back then, but she had nothing to do with swapping the babies. Her only job was the surgery itself."
Emma slipped back down under the covers and closed her eyes, continuing her act of sleeping. How could she possibly have had nothing to do with it?
Two separate DNA tests proved that she and Gillian were twins, yet absolutely no one informed her mother of that fact.
The lead surgeon, the assistants, the nurses, the anesthesiologist—there were so many people in that operating room, but she could only track down two.
Perhaps the other staff members present during that surgery were the breakthrough she needed.
Having pieced that together, Emma stopped feigning sleep, got out of bed, and left the room.
She roamed the floors of the hospital, her entire focus fixed on the plaques honoring the top doctors in each department.
"Emma?"
Pamela walked over holding her medical reports. Seeing Emma staring intently at the doctors' profiles on the wall, she asked curiously, "Why the sudden interest in these?"
"Travis is looking into opening a private hospital in Garrison City."
Emma only gave half an explanation, but Pamela instantly understood.
She offered a gentle warning, "You'd better not say that in front of Raymond. He funded this hospital. If he thinks you're poaching his staff, his temper will flare up again."
Emma nodded. "I know. I'm just looking around. This hospital has quite a few renowned specialists."
Pamela smiled proudly. "Of course. The salaries here rival those in the capital, so naturally, they attract top talent."
"Not only that, but many of the doctors from Peacehaven Hospital moved here as well," the director assisting Pamela eagerly chimed in.
Emma smoothly followed the lead. "A lot of them?"
"Oh, absolutely. Almost eighty percent of their doctors transferred here."
Emma kept her face perfectly neutral while her mind raced. If eighty percent of Peacehaven's staff had moved to this hospital, the people involved in that surgery had to be here, too.
Director Courtney wouldn't let people who shared such a massive secret out of her sight.
"Emma, since you're a doctor, could you look at these reports for me? The specialist used too much medical jargon earlier, and I didn't quite catch it all."
Standing on the escalator together, Emma took the reports and studied them closely.
She was so absorbed in the paperwork that she didn't notice the figure at the top of the escalator, head bowed, staring at her with malicious intent.
"Everything looks fine. If you're still feeling uncomfortable, Pamela, I can check your pulse for a second opinion."
Resting against his chest, Emma realized with a start that Carter's embrace made her feel undeniably safe.
"Is Emma okay?"
Pamela's voice echoed from off to the side. Jolted by the reminder that they were in public, Emma hurriedly pushed Carter away.
"Pamela, are you alright?"
Emma turned to help her up. Pamela struggled to her feet. "I think I sprained my ankle."
"I'll take her to see a doctor. Go back to the room and wait for me," Emma instructed Carter.
Carter refused to let her out of his sight. "I'm coming with you."
As the three of them moved down the hallway, Raymond rolled out of a private elevator corridor not far away.
He stared at their retreating backs, his gaze dark and unreadable, before his eyes locked onto the still-running escalator.
Meanwhile, in an isolated corner of the hospital, a voice muttered low.
"Carter Harrington ruined my plans again. I have to find a way to separate them."
