Emma sighed, feeling it was best to go see Chase right away.
She slipped on the flat shoes and returned to her room.
Carter lowered his eyes, staring at the hand his wife had just treated, and let out a soft chuckle.
"Toby Yates said someone tipped him off about when you'd arrive in Garrison City. Even the restaurant you ate at was sent to him by someone else.
The police traced the number. It was a virtual online number, but the IP address used to send the message was located in Capital City."
Emma frowned. "In Capital City?"
"Exactly. Capital City, specifically the Harrington Estate outside the city."
Emma's gaze darkened. It was that location again.
The last time Levi checked Kyle Yardley's phone, one of the numbers was also tracked back to Capital City, pointing straight to the Harrington Estate.
Was Raymond Harrington inextricably linked to all of this?
"Emma, you need to be very careful of Raymond."
Emma looked over at him. Chase wouldn't say something like that without good reason.
"Nurse Marlow died five years ago, half a year after Mercy Private Hospital opened. I looked closely at Raymond's discharge date from the hospital, and it was almost the exact same time. And there's an even bigger coincidence—"
Chase narrowed his eyes, continuing, "Initially, Nurse Marlow's death was ruled an accident. It was only because her family insisted on an autopsy that anomalies were found. However, after the killer was caught, the family—who had initially demanded a harsh sentence—issued a letter of forgiveness right before the trial. Once the case closed, the entire family moved away."
Emma understood. The only things that could make a family change their stance so drastically were bribery or threats.
But if bribery alone had worked, it would never have gotten to the autopsy stage. That made threats far more likely.
"Raymond was in Garrison City during Nurse Marlow's car accident. When you had your accident, Raymond was in the same city again, staying at an estate not far from the scene.
An area restricted from large vehicles somehow had a heavy truck drive right into it, onto a racing track, with the security cameras conveniently malfunctioning. Not many people have the power to pull that off. Raymond is highly suspicious."
Emma had considered this, but there was always one unavoidable issue.
Carter asked with concern. Emma had walked a bit too fast, and now her cramps were acting up. She hunched over slightly, leaning against the door, holding her stomach as she looked up at him.
"Have you ever asked why the Harrington family arranged a marriage between me and Percy when I was eight?"
Carter hadn't expected her to rush over just to ask this. Though slightly confused, he answered truthfully.
"Twenty years ago, the Harrington family was eager to dominate the pharmaceutical market. But the talents we cultivated over the years weren't enough to expand our territory.
Originally, our family wanted Raymond to marry into the Jennings family, but the youngest daughter—your mother—already had a three-year-old of her own."
Emma blinked. Carter stepped forward, holding her with one hand while gently massaging her stomach with the other.
"So my grandfather decided to aim for your generation. After five years of observation, he chose Percy to be engaged to you."
The warmth from his large hand easing her cramps made Emma feel much better. She straightened up slightly, tilting her head to look at Carter beside her.
"You aren't much older than Percy. Why was he the one engaged to me, and not you?"
