Emma looked at her skeptically. Sylvia crossed her arms and leaned back.
"The reason the Harringtons sponsored her was a complete lie fabricated by Phoebe and her mother. Her father was a murderer. Over a decade ago, he intentionally caused a fatal car crash and died in it. There was a child's body in the car, but it wasn't her brother."
Sylvia arched an eyebrow triumphantly, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Emma, you really have terrible taste in friends."
Emma was stunned by the revelation.
Still finding it hard to believe, she stared at Sylvia. "Can you verify any of this?"
"Why would I lie? Ever since Phoebe hooked up with Owen, I've dug into her family's past. Funny enough, the man her father killed had ties to your family."
Sylvia picked up the phone she had just tossed aside, swiped through a few photos, and pushed it back in front of Emma.
Emma glanced down and saw a police record.
It clearly documented that Phoebe's father had been charged with vehicular homicide. It confirmed his death and noted the presence of an unidentified child in the vehicle who appeared to have no relation to him.
The victim of the crash was a prominent local real estate tycoon, Franklin Vance.
Seeing Emma's shocked expression put Sylvia in a great mood.
"You treated her like a friend, but she never truly opened up to you. In the third year you were out of the country, she got involved with my fiancé. Now Owen has canceled our engagement for her. She used your connections to network with our social circle. You were a pawn from the very beginning."
Emma's gaze darkened. She transferred the photo of the file to her own phone before replying, "Are you sure she even knows about this? Besides, she didn't use my resources to get anywhere."
Her friendship with Phoebe had always been simple and pure.
"Don't be naive. Do you really think the police wouldn't inform the family that the dead child in the car wasn't theirs?" Sylvia sneered. "And what I said earlier wasn't just empty talk. If it hadn't been for you, the Harringtons would never have suddenly decided to pick a playmate for Scarlett."
If Emma said the videos and photos wouldn't be leaked, they were safe.
Sylvia walked away without looking back, leaving Emma to digest her words.
Not everything Sylvia said was true, but some of the information was definitely useful.
However, the day after Emma returned to Carter's mansion, Julian suddenly called her.
"Emma, whatever I say next, I need you to stay calm."
Julian's grim tone made Emma's heart skip a beat.
"Mom and Dad's holiday resort was attacked. The situation is unclear right now, and we don't know if they're safe."
