Emma offered a faint smile, turned her chair to fully face Evelyn, and sat down with relaxed confidence.
Crossing her long, stunning legs, she leaned back naturally, an arched eyebrow signaling her pure amusement.
"The Harringtons are a prestigious family, and you two aren't exactly strapped for cash. Since you're so desperate to look after your niece, surely you have the means to buy her a house and hire her a maid?
Sending a freshly graduated girl to crash at her married cousin's house—do you think because you're stupid, everyone else is too? Do you honestly believe I don't know exactly what you're plotting?"
Emma had already been suppressing her rage out of sheer anxiety for her foster parents' safety. The only reason she hadn't exploded earlier was because of Carter's presence.
But with Evelyn pushing her luck, Emma finally let the flames out.
"Emma, she is Evelyn! How dare you speak to your elders like that?"
Stuart shot up from the sofa and stormed over, glaring at Emma with absolute disgust.
Emma smirked. "Elders? Even Scarlett, Carter's actual biological sister, rarely visits the company or bothers us at home now that he's married. What makes Tessa so special? What makes you so special?"
Emma was firing on all cylinders. Tessa practically weaponized her innocent routine, whining, "Emma, my aunt just wants you to look out for me! If you're jealous and don't want to help, just say so. Why are you being so mean?"
"Jealous of you? Do you need my maid to fetch you a mirror? When it comes to looks and my stunning curves, I'm miles ahead of you. When it comes to talent, I'm highly respected across multiple industries. And when it comes to background, even Carter has to bow down. I honestly can't fathom a single thing about you worth being jealous of."
Emma didn't hold back on singing her own praises. The blunt comparison turned Tessa's face an ugly shade of red. Tears welling in her eyes, she looked pitifully at Carter.
"Carter, Tessa grew up with you! Are you really going to let Emma humiliate her, humiliate us, like this?" Evelyn demanded, turning her glare on Carter.
Carter paused thoughtfully and nodded. "She makes a great point."
A flash of triumph crossed Evelyn's eyes. She was just about to shoot Emma a smug look when Carter added, "My wife is undeniably exceptional in every single way."
With the Vance family in crisis, didn't Emma have to rely on the Harringtons?
This was the perfect time to knock her down a peg and sneak their niece into the house. They would never get an opportunity this good again.
But she hadn't expected Emma to completely tear off all pretenses without a shred of mercy.
Emma shot a disdainful glare at Evelyn. As for the Harrington family drama, she'd let Carter handle the trash himself.
With that thought, she stood up, spun around flawlessly, and threw herself directly into Carter's arms.
"Carter, your family is taking advantage of my parents and brother being out of the country to bully me."
"What are you going to do about it?"
