Panic seized Phoebe's heart, and she frantically dialed her mother's number.
But the call wouldn't go through. Gillian hid the dark, calculated gleam in her eyes, replacing it with an expression of deep concern.
"Could something have happened? Do you want to ask Emma? I heard her godparents were also vacationing on Sabine Island and got caught in it. They've already been rescued. You could ask her about the situation on the ground. Travis Cole should still be there."
Phoebe nodded rapidly. Seeing her desperate rush to leave, Gillian grabbed her arm again. "Don't mention me to Emma, or she might refuse to help you. You know how much she and I hate each other right now."
"I know," Phoebe said, completely out of her mind with worry.
Gillian hugged her, offering fake comfort. "Don't worry too much. I'll ask around and see if I can get any news from the island."
"Thank you so much, Gillian."
Phoebe sprinted off, her heart in her throat.
Once she was completely out of sight, Gillian crossed her arms and let out a cold sneer.
"Idiot."
As long as the misunderstanding between Phoebe and Emma deepened, this little pawn would only become easier to control.
Smiling, she pulled out her phone and dialed a number.
"Owen, Phoebe is being bullied by Emma right now, and Carter Harrington is backing her up. I'll send you the location. Whether you show up or not is your business."
Up in the mall's rooftop garden restaurant, Emma was striking elegant poses as Jocelyn enthusiastically snapped photos.
"Perfect. Hold that, let's take one more."
Jocelyn was having the time of her life. Standing beneath the blooming rose trellises, Emma's lowered gaze looked breathtakingly ethereal.
"This one could be our new magazine cover."
Jocelyn fully intended to use her junior's photos for all the company's future covers. She was just too gorgeous to waste.
Carter watched them for a moment before stepping out to handle a quick errand.
