When Emma walked out of the police station, she saw Carter's car parked at the entrance.
His car was particularly easy to spot, as it was the exact same model she had bought for herself after returning to the country.
"How did you know I was here, Carter?"
Emma was genuinely surprised. After all, this was Garrison City.
"I'm the one who arranged your driver."
Carter didn't plan on hiding this fact. Letting her know the driver was trustworthy would only benefit her.
Dawning realization hit Emma, and she suddenly thought about her apartment.
"Is my apartment yours, too?"
Carter turned his head slightly. He didn't dare admit to that.
If Emma thought he was some kind of creep, that wouldn't end well.
However, seeing his reaction, Emma knew her guess was spot-on.
"Thank you, Carter. You've saved me a lot of trouble since I've been back." Emma was in a great mood right now. She lifted her hand to her lips and blew him a playful kiss.
She had to admit, Carter's intervention had indeed spared her a lot of headaches in the country.
For a fleeting second, Carter felt as though his very soul had been snatched away. He didn't snap back to reality until the driver let out a polite cough.
"And there's this bracelet, it's..." Carter paused, treading somewhat carefully. "My sister bought it. She said it would definitely look stunning on you. She has the exact same one."
Emma took the gift, tilting her head back with a bright, teasing smile. "Is showering people with gifts upon every meeting a Harrington family rule?"
"You can consider it my personal rule."
Carter's voice was deep and magnetic, sending an involuntary flutter straight to her heart.
Emma eyed him thoughtfully, her gaze making Carter feel a little uncertain.
"Get in the car first. It's not safe for you to head back alone."
The police station in Garrison City definitely wouldn't hold Charles. The matter would ultimately devolve into an economic dispute, which meant Emma could easily encounter an 'accident' on her way out of the city.
Emma accepted his kindness. Out of boredom during the ride, she unboxed the bracelet.
However, she couldn't clasp it on with one hand. Carter caught a glimpse and immediately reached over.
"Scarlett actually has good taste. This bracelet suits you perfectly."
Emma was genuinely terrified; car accidents were a deeply ingrained trauma for her.
"Your arm..."
Emma discreetly examined his arm. He had protected her without a millisecond of hesitation.
She remembered a year when Percy had visited her abroad. Their car had braked sharply, and Percy had spent the entire time cursing out the driver for not knowing how to drive properly.
In her youth, she had mistaken that for an expression of love. Looking back now, it was nothing more than emotional instability.
"I guess the muscles I built finally came in handy."
Carter joked to show that he was perfectly fine.
Emma looked at him, an unfamiliar, quiet emotion taking root in her heart.
Because Emma had filed a police report, Jennings Pharma's suspected tax evasion was also dragged into the spotlight.
Bernard was arrested, the plant was shut down for investigation, and Charles's company was thrown into an unprecedented crisis.
Logan was swamped dealing with company audits and inspections, and Charles was strictly barred from conducting any transactions in the near term. When the news reached Tristan's ears, he furiously kicked over the chair next to him.
"That ungrateful wretch! I must have given her too much leeway last time, making her think she's untouchable. How dare she go after Charles."
