Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 36

He began to reevaluate the person sitting before him, someone he had previously believed he knew intimately.

"I have no desire to waste words. With the Lockwood Group in hot water, and given that I'm the whistleblower, it's best we keep our meetings to a minimum right now."

With that, Emma set down her silverware.

"Take your time with the meal. It's on me."

She stood up to leave, but Logan frowned and called out to stop her.

"Did you set Charles up on purpose?"

Emma's steps halted. She glanced back at him with a half-smile. "Logan, did you know Charles tried to force me to take over as the legal representative?"

Logan's body went rigid. It was brutally obvious he hadn't known about the legal representative issue.

Seeing his reaction, Emma was in no rush to leave.

"Charles told me that as long as I took the fall, I'd still be a Lockwood daughter once I got out. I checked the domestic legal codes—given Jennings Pharma's current mess, they'd undoubtedly seek the maximum penalty."

Her weightless gaze accompanied her words, yet the moment it landed on Logan, it placed an inexplicably heavy pressure on him.

"He wanted to buy seven years of my youth with the hollow title of a Lockwood heiress. When I refused, he tried to force my hand. Even then, I left him an out. I've done more than enough."

Emma finished her piece and waved her hand dismissively. Logan was a smart man; he had to catch her drift. She was holding a massive piece of leverage over the Lockwoods.

If the Lockwoods were willing to humble themselves, she was open to letting them off the hook.

But if they refused and insisted on doing things the hard way, she was fully prepared to give Charles a very special gift.

Logan abruptly stood up. "About the contract..."

He trailed off into silence. Although he fundamentally disagreed with what Charles had done, the damage was already done. Saying anything else felt entirely pointless.

Emma gave him a passing glance, the corners of her lips curling into a beautiful arc.

She saw the unspoken conflict in Logan's eyes. It was obvious he knew their family was in the wrong, yet he still chose to side with the Lockwoods and remain silent.
