Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 42

"Don't worry about the tip. It's been routed through the corporate account as restaurant revenue."

Carter coughed lightly after speaking.

Emma looked over at him. "Are you coming down with a cold?"

"I don't think so."

Carter rubbed his itchy nose. From the passenger seat, his assistant finally spoke up.

"The boss was working until the early hours of the morning. He barely got any sleep before he heard you were taken to the police station, Ms. Lockwood, and he rushed straight over."

He paused, then added, "He hasn't even had breakfast."

Carter raised a fist to his mouth, trying to muffle another bout of coughing, while glaring at his assistant. "You talk too much."

The assistant immediately clamped his mouth shut. Emma shot him a grateful look, then thought for a moment before addressing the driver. "Please take us straight to Mr. Harrington's downtown apartment."

The driver checked the rearview mirror, silently seeking Carter's approval.

The assistant gave a subtle nod, and the driver immediately changed course.

Even though it was Carter's own apartment, being brought there by Emma gave him a secret thrill.

He sat stiffly on the couch like a polite guest while Emma bustled around the kitchen, eventually bringing out a steaming pot of rich chicken soup.

"Thankfully, I had some vitamins delivered a couple of days ago. You aren't fully sick yet, so a warm meal and some rest should clear it right up."

Carter stood up immediately. "Let me."

The heavy pot wasn't exactly light, and Carter, terrified she might burn herself, practically snatched it from her hands.

Emma leaned against the kitchen counter, smiling brightly. "You two Harrington brothers really are complete opposites."

Back when Percy had flown overseas to visit her, she had just learned how to cook and was eager to make him a meal.

Percy had sprawled out on her couch like he owned the place, playing video games while waiting for her to serve him, complaining and rushing her whenever he got impatient.

Hearing her subtle praise, a flash of pure satisfaction crossed Carter's eyes as he turned to grab the bowls and silverware.
