By the time Hayden chased after her, Emma had already left in a car.
He raised an intrigued eyebrow and headed straight for Carter's company.
"That girl of yours disappeared. I lost track of her."
"She has a name. Don't call her that next time." Carter calmly capped his fountain pen, not looking surprised by the fact that Hayden had lost her. "Did she go home? Did something happen at the club?"
Hayden slouched into the sofa, casually picking up some fruit meant for guests. "Something did happen, but she wasn't the one who got hurt."
A hint of amusement flashed in Carter's eyes. Seeing this, Hayden couldn't help but sit up straight. "You're laughing? You didn't see how ruthless Em—Emma was. She kicked him with a sweet smile on her face, and she was wearing stilettos. She kicked that bastard Harvey so hard he couldn't get up for ages."
"Is that surprising? If she wasn't capable, how could she survive abroad? She's not like most international students."
Carter spoke with a trace of heartache. Hayden looked at him in surprise.
"Alright, as long as you understand her. Emma is too strange. My old man is getting up there in years, so no matter what kind of person she is, it doesn't affect him. But you're different."
Hayden had gone to the club today out of loyalty to his buddy. He wanted to see exactly what kind of person Emma was.
The result had exceeded his expectations.
"Don't underestimate her. She has more money and resources than I do." Carter spun his pen with a touch of pride. "Between her and me, I'm the one reaching out of my league."
Hayden's mouth fell open slightly, forgetting to chew the fruit in his mouth.
Good lord, was this still the arrogant, aloof childhood friend who always looked down on everyone?
Did those words really just come out of his mouth?
Emma's encounter with Harvey reminded her of her high school days.
Feeling annoyed, she simply went straight home.
But returning home made her inevitably think of the past. Her mind was filled with happy memories of being at home with her parents and brothers.
"I remember when you first arrived at the professor's house, the three of us thought you were mute. Clara even went out of her way to learn sign language, but it ended up being completely useless."
Julian laughed again. Emma remembered that amusing incident and burst out laughing too.
The irritation and frustration in her heart completely dissipated. She sat up with a beaming smile and whined playfully, "Julian, Levi is simply too amazing. With him acting as vice president, I practically have nothing to do at the company.
Right now, I can't find any leads regarding my birth family. I don't want to wander around all day and run into those people. Why don't you ship some equipment over first so I can oversee the experiments?"
Emma really wanted to find something to do. At the very least, she didn't want to stay idle while there was no progress on uncovering her background.
"I know you can't sit still. I've been busy with the equipment approval these past two days. I've already secured a dedicated cargo flight for transport, so just wait for my word."
Emma cheered.
"You don't need to let anyone ruin your mood. I'll be back in the country in about a month, and then no one will be able to give you a hard time."
