Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 75

Percy kept his head tilted back, unable to speak, yet terrified of staying silent.

He could only clutch his nose and mumble indistinctly, "Cousin, I'm sorry."

"Get out."

Carter ordered coldly. Dizzy and disoriented from the punch, Percy scrambled to his feet, turned, and bolted.

Then, Carter looked at Emma with a hint of concern. Percy's words had been vile, and he hadn't been able to hold back his punch. He hoped he hadn't scared her.

Emma arched an eyebrow slightly. Percy was lucky. If she hadn't seen the elevator coming down, she would have made her move long ago, and it wouldn't have ended with just a punch and a bloody nose.

"I'm sorry." Carter looked at Emma earnestly, then crouched down to pick up the torn pieces of thick paper one by one. "I forgot to make him stay and apologize to you."

Emma found this amusing and smiled. "His apology wouldn't be sincere anyway. It's better not to hear it and save my time."

"Next time you come, I'll come down earlier to get you."

Carter shoved the shredded paper into his pocket. Emma followed him into the elevator, staring at the pocket of his suit, and pursed her lips. "A suit worth thousands of dollars, and you're using it to hold trash?"

"What you brought isn't trash."

Carter's gaze deepened. He spoke with utmost sincerity.

Emma shrugged, looking entirely unbothered. "It's just the introduction card for the experimental equipment Vance Group is about to sell publicly here. If it's gone, it's gone. I can print a whole stack of them."

Carter led her toward his office. Only when the door clicked shut did he speak in a low voice.

"The contents don't matter."

"The person who brought it is what matters."

Emma, who was just sitting down, paused for a moment before smiling as if nothing had happened. "Just now, Percy asked me if I came here to hook up with you."

A flicker of nervousness flashed in Carter's eyes. The question of how she replied stuck in his throat, utterly impossible to voice.

But Emma calmly stated it herself.

"I admitted it. I really am here to hook up with you, Boss."

He turned his head away, trying to calm his racing heartbeat.

Emma looked at him with a hint of confusion. "Are you feeling unwell? Here, give me your hand."

"Huh?" Carter was taken aback, wondering if he had misheard.

Emma urged him, "Give me your hand. Let me check your pulse."

"You know how to read a pulse?" Carter was surprised. Wasn't she a finance major?

Emma smiled. "How could I get into Vance Group without knowing medicine? Did you think I relied on my half-baked finance knowledge?"

Carter thought about it and realized it made sense. One had to be strong to forge iron. If she wasn't capable, she wouldn't have established a foothold in Vance Group.

His admiration for her grew even stronger, only to hear Emma speak softly, a sly smile dancing on her lips.

"Mr. Harrington, your heart rate is way too fast."

Carter instantly yanked his hand back, ignoring the burning heat in his ears. He stood up and started looking for something, trying to make himself look busy.
