"Well, I—"
Inez felt the similar tug as before in her chest. The same hum of the dangerous power begging to be unleashed. She gritted her teeth and turned to look behind her. It seemed like that thing finally broke free of the constraints that were stopping it. She said, "Well, we don't have much time."
She turned and before anyone could stop her, she ran straight to where the amorphous was trying to break through the rock walls. She planted herself between the pack and the approaching horror.
"Hey!" She yelled at the thing. "You want me, don't you? I know that you are aiming for me. Congrat–fucking–ulations for having an excellent taste."
Everyone turned to look at her.
"Inez!" Selene called sharply. "Just what are you trying to do?"
"Buying you time," she replied, flashing the woman a grin that didn't reach her eyes. She then turned to look at Matt before saying to him, "No matter what theory you are going to test, do it before I die."
The amorphous roared. It was as if he was provoked by her words; without even waiting for his form to slide past the small ravine, he lunged at Inez with violent eagerness.
Levi and Henley shifted in perfect synchronisation and without even wasting another second. They attacked the amorphous simultaneously, with their claws slashing at the thing. But the amorphous seemed to be resistant to pain itself. Even when two lycans cut through its tar-like flesh, it didn't even flinch and continued moving forward. The only good thing was that it slowed down. But other than that, the beast was completely fine.
"Matt!" Ally screamed when she saw that the thing was continuing forward without stopping. If they didn't do something now, that thing was going to kill them all, and it was going to do that with quite a lot of pleasure.
Matt exhaled shakily. Even though he didn't want to use this resort, he realised that he had no other choice. If he didn't do it then they all were going to die. Gritting his teeth, he raised his hands and muttered, "Okay. Fine. We are going to do it my way."
He then slammed his hands onto the ground.
A pulse of distorted and chaotic energy rippled through the tips of his fingers—it was neither flashy nor obvious. But the air around them warped. The amorphous shrieked and its surface started to get destabilised. Parts of its body started to slough off like hot tar.
Everyone froze.
"Matt, you—"
"I know," Matt interjected when he heard Fenric speak. He gritted his teeth and said to the rest of the pack, "We are not going to speak of this ever again."
"But you—"
"I know, I tripped."
"You tripped on what? A magic circuit?"
"Well, how was I supposed to know that there was a magic circuit hidden here?"
"It is indeed a piece of good news," remarked Henley, flashing a feral smile. "It means that thing does get hurt."
"And if it gets hurt?"
Inez gripped the handles of the wheelchair. Her siren was coiling dangerously close to the surface. "Then we don't need to hold back."
They ran until they crossed the twisted paths and arrived at the small clearing where they had left their RV. It was still where they had left it. Half hidden beneath the leaning pines, dull metal streaked with mud and old ward marks that someone had drawn on it ages ago. No one paid attention to them, but Inez did, and from Matt's flickering eyes, he did too.
"Tell me," Henley panted as he burst through the clearing. "Why am I getting a feeling that we are about to fall into another trap? This vehicle looks a bit suspicious to just me or all of you?"
"There is no need to be so optimistic, Henley," Inez shot back, hauling open the door.
"We don't have another choice anyway," said Matt as he burst through the clearing. "Even if it is a trap. It's either this or the beast… and I am going to pick this—" he pointed to the RV. "It looks much safer than the option behind us."
"I can't believe that I am agreeing with you, but he is right, Hen." Fenric marched past the enforcer as he helped Selene up the ramp first.
BANG!
